Saw an article on Eastside, about Edison Miranda having the best right hand in todays boxing, so got me thinking about who people rate with the best skills and punches in boxing today.

right hand - David Haye

Left Hook - Manny Pacquiao

Jab - Joe Calzaghe

Chin - Glen Johnson

add more to the list, as i really should do some work.

Work rate / stamina = Joe Calzaghe.

Right hand - David Haye

Left Hook - Ponce De Leon (I would've said Williams until Sat night)

Jab - Ronald Wright

Chin - Joe Calzaghe

Right hand Haye

Chin Gary St Clair

Work rate Calzaghe

I quite like Carl Froch's right uppercut.

Pacquaio's left hand, Floyd's defence (and everythin else!), Froch has a class chin, as does Calzaghe, McCall (still), Margarito..

Valero punches v hard too.....

Chin- still McCall if he is active.
workrate/stamina - Sam Soliman
ring smarts - Hopkins/Toney

Jab - Winky (Vernon Forrest close behind)
Workrate - Pacquiao (Joe close behind)
Chin - Joe Calzaghe
Right hand - Haye (I love Kessler's straight right also)

Everything else - Mayweather.

Before Sat, Williams had the best IMO. His fight with Mitchell was amazing. One round was 190 punches thrown.

Morales and Barrera went hammer and tong at each other - and Pacquiao out worked and out lasted them.

Mayorga took a horrific beating off Trinidad, one of the most murderous punchers of the last 20 years. He was whacked all over in the 5th 6th and 7th round ands still came back for more. Dropped by a wicked left hook to the body in the 8th and got back up again.

I remember watching at the time and feeling sorry for him but was amazed at his courage.

I would say that Calzaghe, amongst the top flight, and considering his weight, has the best work rate.

Calzaghe's shots are not the ineffectual type which many high workrate fighters employ, he hits with authority, stopping opponents in their tracks.

Which fight, active today, has the most effective defence?

IMO - Mayweather with Wright a close second.

I agree. Even if they don't land they can still be effective at keeping a fighter off balance, or break his concentration.

In some cases yes, not all.... as Ricky now knows - plus in a situation where you know your not going to land, your not going to throw.... doesn't mean you have a poor workrate. Calzaghe has a great great workrate, but against Lacy he knew he was going to land time and time again - against Kessler... different matter.

i think there's noone out there with a better defence than Matthew Hatton.......box 3,000 miles away from your domestic rivals and they can't lay a glove on you.
