Cotto vs Mayorga?

Seems like this is on for July. Cotto has a routine defense vs Alfonso Gomez first of all.
This though has the making of a great contest - two exciting styles... Cotto's accurate, if slow and hard punches. Vs Mayorga's wild swings.
I don't rate Mayorga's chances at regaining a title - but of all the fighters out there, he might stand the best hope against Cotto. Trinidad, DLH and Spinks all have fast hands - Cotto doesn't and Miguel isn't the hardest to hit.
Although, Mayorga these days can be hurt and can go down (and stay there) - Cotto goes down, but doesn't stay there.

I cant stand Mayorga and hopes Cotto batters him.Is it only me or would anyone else gladly twat Mayorga?

I think he's good value, but does cross the line sometimes. Telling DLH he'll rape his wife was alittle bit harsh. He plays the bad guy very well.
I just can't seeing him getting down to 147.

The guy should have had his licensed taken for threatening to rape DLHs wife.Thats disgusting and sick and has no place in boxing.I like trash talking fighters because its entertainment but Mayorga is just a dickhead. I just cant see how dissing or threatening peoples families sells tickets.
P.S Cotto KO4 Mayorga and Mayorga retires and crawls back in to the cesspit he came from!!!!

He also called him a Maracon when they were face to face in the ring. Merchant and Lampley covered it up quite well. He also allegedly smoked dope before that fight in his limosine according to Steward.
I hope he brings out a book.

Why do you describe his fans as being deluded?
His two most recent scalps have sure'ly proved beyond any doubt that he is one of today's elite fighters. Quintana's upset of Williams adds even more weight to that.
To the fight itself, its a good match and i'd be looking forward to it. Cotto would have to be a heavy favourite going in, but i would not rule out Mayorga bombing him out early. This one reminds me of the film title "There will be blood"!

Agreed. If he has a good year, there's no reason why he won't be a top 3 P4P.

I'd put him in the top 3 now! Mayweather is rightfully in the #1 spot, he's a five weight champion and hardly ever been stretched. But i think Cotto's win over Mosley is better than any win on Mayweather's record. Add to that Cotto seems prepared to fight anyone out there, the same can't be said for Mayweather.
That could open up another debate.... why do we allow fighters to be hailed as the sports #1 P4P if they appear to be dodging there biggest challengers? Perhaps, if we were not prepared to recognise Mayweather as #1 P4P until he fought Cotto, he'd actually fight him. As Cotto is prepared to fight Mayweather (i'm sure), then why should he not be the sports P4P#1? I'm sure he'd do the title justice. What good does it do boxing to have a P4P#1 champion like Mayweather when all he claims to be interested in is earning money? Food for thought perhaps?

Interesting points fella. However, the DLH win was by far the best achievement of both fighters. Especially as Floyd was fighting at least one division above his optimum weight.
Current Scene ran a thread last week about rating Floyd and Miguel's opponents in a top 10. With the exception of Judah, Mosley and Malignaggi, Floyd had it all IMO.
Floyd has won more titles than Martina Navratilova, Miguel has a few years of catch up to make, but technically he's a 2-time WW champion now (remember Mosley was the "interim" WBC Welterweight champion after Floyd decided to fight Oscar).
IMO by the end of 2009 Diaz, Cotto and Pavlik will be battling to be P4P #1.

It'd be fun while it lasted, but IMO Cotto would deal with Mayorga pretty easily.... not that Mayorga would make 147 comfortably now...
As for p4p... Cotto's got to be considered top 5 now, after his last two wins... Shame he's taking a gimme against Gomez really when there's so many big fights around welter to be made...
