anyone got some examples of a renowned pit-pat puncher suddenly discovering how to explode with power? this can be a temporary epiphany or he may have repeated the trick after that great moment of enlightenment. scour the sports history for those KO's that nobody thought he had in him. just a bit of fun

Junior Whitter turned pro without a rep as a puncher. Early as a pro he couldnt crack an egg.

Same could be said of the one and only Tommy 'Hitman' Hearns; in the vest he was all boxer. Once he started punching for pay he became a stone cold KO artist.

i thought nunn had decent power though. he started his career with a host of ko's and remained potent until quite late

nah, he punched like a girl.

Powder puff punches for the most part from the fleet footed southpaw IMO.

whitakers speed and balance and timing were a joy top watch during that period of his career. i dont think nazario wanted to be there from the off.

thinking about it, the nunn example is a very good one. kalambay took that flush. and he was a very durable guy usually.

His whole career is full of mouth water examples of boxing brilliance.

He was derided as being boring for the most part whilst in his pomp. It is only now he is getting the props he deserves for his rare talent.

I could watch him box all day

(the one time that overhand cricket bowl of a right hand landed, it made Chris look like a one shot KO merchant)

Chris Eubank v John Jarvis

When Eubank could get his right hand off properly, the results could be devastating.

i dont think either of those gentlemen would argue though they probably dont remember too much about it. chris was never regarded as a pit pat customer though.
nice posts. good to see those again

True, but those particular one punch KOs promised a false dawn in Eubank's career.

I dont like to think how many 12 round 'stinkfests' I could have been saved from watching as a kid if Eubank had delivered his right hand correctly on a few more occasions. :D

the ottke mundine is a good pick. cant stand mundine

its because eubank threw it from a position of poor balance most of the time. fully committed to the punch but way off balance. and sometimes off the wrong foot!

37 KOs from 58 wins is hardly powder puff mate :TU:

His KO ratio is flattering. He rarely set himself to punch and was never considered a banger despite what are on the surface good stats.

A lot is to do with style. If you're a tactical, fleet footed fighter you score less kos thatn if you go looking for it like Nigel Benn.

Doesn't mean you can't punch, it just isn't your no 1 strategy.

Some guys just can't punch though - EG Wayne Mcullough

True, style certainly has a large bearing on matters.

Look at 'Sweet C' Colin McMillan. He never hit with any real venom or 'dig' but he scored a a decent stoppage % because he hit fighters when they didnt expect to be hit, from angles they didnt see them coming.

I used to love watching him fight - from the Gary De Roux fight onwards. Lovely style but little 'pop' on his punches.

Raw KO percentages dont tell the whole story - individual styles and a fighters intention/mindset are as important.

How about when Barry Jones dropped Freitas with that beautiful tight left hook. You'd never have had Jones down as a none puncher, watching that clip.

Great shout.

Didnt Barry proclaim that he had never knocked anyone out, amatuer or pro, yet dumped the Brazilian power bomber on his ar5e in their title fight. Surreal stuff.

When discussing Ottke-Mundine with Freiheit a while back he made an interesting point regarding Ottke. Sven may not have been the powderpuff puncher we all thought as never had the need to stand and trade or plant his feet because he had fine tuned his negative hit, move and hold style to a fine art. Mundine after all did negotiate 12 rounds with Echols and Green so his chin may not be that bad.

Anyway it's just a thought that Ottke could maybe punch harder when needed.

Herol Graham only scored 4 KO's in his first 17 fights, then came out and blitzed Prince Rodney in a round. Think that was on BBC as well.

The Ottke KO was more of a freak occurence with Mundine's head being snapped into his shoulder awkwardly, sort of knocking himself out.
