Pavlik V Taylor II **Spoiler**

Okay so the dust has settled and i just watched the re-run. Attack me if you like but am i the only one who had it a lot closer than the judges? Dare i suggest i had Taylor winning?!

Sharper, faster, crips jab and overhand rights to Pavlik's none stop aggression. Pavlik i think pulled away as the fight progressed but 117-111? Who are those Top Rank clowns they get commentating and what were they seeing. Mario Lopez (whoever he is) said during one round a telling comment "What do you go for, the none stop aggression of Pavlik or the quality of Taylor?" Err well....the quality, no?!?! It doesn't matter if a man is coming forward all night if he isn't landing and getting countered.

Anywho, what i am saying is i am not really arguing with the winner but Taylor exonerated himself with a good display of Boxing and i think his defence was underrated as he blocked a lot of the shots on his gloves. Pavlik looked a bit sluggish and pushed his punches, little snap early on and was a bit too upright, throwing mechanical one-two's. Wouldn't fancy his chance against Calzaghe but anyway.

Good fight, Setanta have a great deal going and well done to Pavlik. Discuss :TU: :D

I thought Pav won by 3 rounds. Taylor threw flashy combinations but a lot were blocked, and he wasn't busy enough.

He seemed very wary of blowing himself out and also of getting caught solidly.

The main thing that stays in my mind after the fight is how annoying the commentary was - not so much what they were saying but FOUR guys all wanting to say their bit.

And Ray mancini made some good points but sounded like he'd drunk 10 espressos and inhaled a bit of helium....

Pavlik actually was missing more and landing mainly on gloves. Taylor landed and missed his flashy combos. Pavlik did have much more pressure but most of it didn't land and it was ineffictive pressure especially early.

I would say Taylor landed the better shots in the majority of the rounds but it was a close fight

The Americans pushed the boat out when they started using three commentators, a main man, an ex-fighter and a colour analyst or whatever they are called. It works okay in most parts but trying four is a new one for my memory. It just doesn't add up and i struggled to work out who was saying what half the time.

Almost the same, assuming that you gave Pavlik the first to make your numbers make sense. I differed in the 11th though, going for Pavlik to make it 115-113. It was certainly a close fight.

Pavlik by no more than two rounds, rediculous scoring I thought. Taylor fought the right fight and his combinations were very good. Pavlik didnt look good at times and seemed to lose confidence. Calzaghe would outbox him.

Taylor always seemed conscious of his stamina issues and therefore did not exert himself fully. It was Pavlik who seemed to be blowing though as the bout progressed and if Taylor had more confidence in his conditioning then it could have been very interesting.

I had Taylor winning by one but have no complaints are some rounds were so close.

Good close main event which I didnt score round by round but on balance felt could have gone either way be a round or so. Pavlik didnt look as good as I thought he could do and Taylor had the flashier combos.

I would welcome a third meeting.

Got to say I was shocked with the way Montiel just dominated Martin Castillo in the main suppport. I was looking forward to this fight as much as the main event and expected a close but exciting battle.

Castillo never recovered from that early knockdown and the fight was rather one sided from that point.

if taylor was just a bit better on his feet and that bit slicker he'd be really tough to beat i think.

and better in the 2nd half of fights.

Agree with that. I watched the HBO broadcast, so I didn't have to put up with any of that Top Rank crap.

I thought the right man won... I had it 7-5, but I gave the 11th to Taylor and that round could have gone either way.

I do like to score for ring generalship also and I just thought Pavlik edged it on that front.

I had it a round or 2 in favor of Pavlik.

Props to the man. He was forced into an immediate rematch at a weight and location (to avoid Pavlik's travelling fans) that Taylor wanted. Because of the clause he couldn't even defend his belt which is a bit out of order if you ask me.

Taylor was sturdier up at 164 and Pavlik was more sluggish with the extra weight. Because of this Taylor lasted the distance. Thought Pavlik was going to dominate after rd 1, but he lost his snap & rhythm.

For me Taylor lost it in the 11th, when Pavlik hurt him with those body shots. Had Taylor won the last two I'd have had it a draw at very least.

Taylor seems destined to be in close, tight contests but now the judges are going against him (ala Toney post Jones).

So anyway, Pavlik beat Taylor on his own terms so let's move on. Defend vs all comers (Duddy, Lockett etc), try to force unifications (Abraham).

Pav hurt Taylor more and I'm sure when you see the punchstats will have landed c.10% more punches.

A close fight but only one winner

Agree with Terry on Montiel-Castillo. I saw how Montiel struggled with Luis Melendez on Versus and thought he was looking a bit worn out. I even picked Castillo by split decision! :o

That's my sentiment too. I have to say, Taylor's tactics were brilliant, and credit must go to his trainer for that. If Taylor had the stamina he could have avenged his first loss.

Pavlik didn't look good, but I think he will use this fight as a very good lesson and come into future fights better prepared for what tactics may be thrown at him.

From the basis of this fight, Calzaghe would beat both Pavlik and Taylor.

Taylor won 2:30 of the 11th and he won that period of it very clearly. Pavlik dominated that 30seconds but that wasnt enough for me. I could give Taylor a few of the rounds I gave to Pavlik based on the '30seconds of dominance'

Pavlik landed 267 punches to Taylor's 178. He almost doubled Taylor in punches thrown, with 845 to Taylor's 456.

It was a pretty close fight. But it certainly was not as close and controversial as Joe Calzaghe's "win" over Robin Reid.
Taylor threw the more meaningful effectful shots though. his shots really had some zing where Pavlik stuck to his meat and bread 1-2, which allot of the time didnt have much on it. I can understand some giving it to Pavlik but Taylor took it for me
