16TH February show at Blackpool tower circus

VIP started the year 2008 with a cracking show at the sold out Blackpool Tower which generated a magic atmosphere and we cannot wait to go back there , results were as follows :-

BRIAN ROSE –Blackpool’s local hero showed great character to win the last 3 rounds against Manoocheri Salari and force a draw from a fight that looked lost after the opening 3 of this 6 x 3 top of the bill contest. Brian started very slow and it looked like the occasion had got to him ,when he was caught with a solid shot which had his legs gone at the end of the second there did not look anyway back. However, after regrouping in the 3rd he finally got a spring in his step and turn the fight round working well behind good jabs which deservedly saw him get a share of the spoils – he will be a better fighter because of this.

JACK ANFIELD –The 18 year old moved to 4-0 with a shut out points victory . It was a solid mature performance against the very experienced David Kirk who had to use all his ring craft to survive the steady and accurate pressure of Arnfield who varied his punches very well and looks one to watch.

ALEX MATVIENKO – The one man riot did not fail again with a 2nd round stoppage of Davy Jones. This was developing into another classic punch up with both fighters going for it when suddenly Alex caught Jones with a left hook on the way out of a clinch and it was all over.

RICHARD GODDINS- Showed a great improvement from his debut and moved to 2-0 with a very tidy exhibition of punch picking which left the journeyman Senol Dervis outclassed in every round and lucky to see the final bell.

JON KAYS – Moved to 4-0 with a sound points win over Steve Gethin who took some nice shots without ever looking in trouble.

CHRIS JOHNSON – Like the Mattvienko fight this was another dust up with the Mancunian Dave Murray coming to fight and looking for a win. Up to the 5th round there was little in the contest but like Alex , Chris found a crisp shot on the jaw of Murray coming out of a heated exchange and the ref was quick to jump in and stop the fight as Chris began to pummel Murray on the ropes.

MARTIN MURRAY – Cheered on by a massive following Martin forced the fight for the whole 6 rounds but never looked like getting the stoppage against Dean Walker who is a master of the spoiling game and managed to tie Murray up for most of the fight. It was a sound if not spectacular performance on the back of a hand injury and will have knocked some ring rust off for his next performance which will be in Liverpool on the 16th March.

DANNY HARDING – Weighed in 6lb over the agreed 10st 2lb and his opponent Baz Carey choose not to give the weight away and therefore the 8th fight of the night did not happen , fortunately the crowd were served a treat of boxing and this was not missed.

Nice spin on Rose but i think it's a bit of a setback for him getting that draw. As you say though Stegsie it's all about character and hopefully it will be a good learning experience for Brian.

What was Harding doing coming in so far over the agreed limit?

That was unprofessional - either they were trying it on with Baz (setting a weight limit his opponent would never reach and hoping the Cov fighter would accept the weight differential for a marginally bigger purse) or Harding didnt get his diet right.

Either way it doesn't reflect well on Harding.

Strange one. Why agree to 10st 2lb and then come in 6 pounds over the limit?!

On paper this show seemed very one-sided, with it being obvious who was going to win. And it looks like it pretty much turned out that way, too.

Still, its obviously is popular- I guess a lot of people are happy to turn up and cheer on a friend to an almost guaranteed win.

He was very lucky that when he got caught, there was literally only seconds of the round left, otherwise he looked in a lot of trouble.

There always seems to be a lot of debate on these forums about a 0 loss record acting as a bit of a weight on a boxers shoulders, as it can cause them to be over hyped and over protected through their early career. You only need to look at the publicity / praise that Mark Thompson got out of his loss, when stepping up a level to see that if the 0 has to go it isn't the end of the world.

In effect, although Rose still has his, if he does go on to fulfil his potential at a higher level, this may well have been a much more valuable experience for him than a dominant win. Full credit to him for the way he got back into things.

Rose was lucky to get a share it could be argued he won only 2 rounds great fight tho.

Bri was ina real fight in his last outing too.

On Danny harding, he wasnt due to fight until jeff Thomas pulled out fairly late. Suppose with all the inactivity and Christmas he'd put a couple of lbs on. he was supposed to be going to portrugal with Carl johanneson for a training camp, so I suppose he wasnt expecting to fight... !?!!

Carey came in at 10stone 3 anyway. There was only 3 pound difference. Careys a journeyman not like it was a title fight.

If you are looking for someone to blame it should be your overweight mate, not Carey.

Baz started out as a super feather, why should he give all that weight away?

Home card fighters try it on with the weight all the time - I dont blame Baz for taking what was owed to him and doing one (if that was indeed the case).

He came in at ten stone eight.Carey came in at 10.3 like he was meant to.

Carey usualy fights at around ten stone and is a very small light welter.Look at it as a valuable lesson in disipline and learn the rules of boxing if you dont make the weight you dont fight.

Or you could get him a light middle weight weighing around 11 stone if 6 pounds is no big deal.

Its not the first time Harding has pulled this little trick - Buckley has to conceed 8lbs or so to him in 2006 I beleive.
