In the early 1950's, a contest was held in the hometown of a
future welterweight champion so that fans could select a suitable
nickname for their hero. When the results indicated a strong
preference for "Showboat" the boxer's co-managers--known in
local circles as "Hymie the Mink" and "Kingfish"--exercised their
veto and immediately gave him another non de plume.
Who was the future champion?
What was his nickname?

tomato...don't I get at least a B plus? Not my fault Boxrec didn't have listing for Hobo. Well, maybe a Cplus....to keep me from getting too smug for remembering a name like Hobo Wiler.
just curious....how the hell did you come up with this one?

Of course. Both you and TKOTOM get a B+. TKOTOM was correct, just not what I was looking for and you got Hobo Wiler.
I was something of a fan of local club fighter Hobo Wiler and I just happened to remember King Roman also fought a few times in the Seattle area and it made me think of their famous link.
