I'm quite suprised Africa hasn't produced more HW boxers at the moment. Given the drive for them to get out of poverty (sweeping statement, I know), and their diet (which is a damn sight more nutritious than US or UK HWs by the look of things!), and the severe lack of quality around right now, I'd have expected a few world class boxers to be on the scene by now.

I like the african fighters like Tackie.I hope these kids do make it in the big time and get decent purses.It makes me wonder how lucky i am to be training in a gym with half decent equipment and these guys havent got much yet still produce Olympic quality boxers!!

Yes the lack of homegrown heavyweights from Africa is surprising , they usually lack in the chin department for some reason.
I may be wrong but isn't Samuel Peter the first black African to hold a version of the heavyweight championship?

There is a suburb of Accra called Bukom which is the boxing capital of west Africa, Bukon produced Azumah Nelson, Ike Quartey and a slew of others, there was a very interesting article in boxing news about Bukom around 5 years ago.

Ghanaians are not as big or powerfully built as say Nigerians, which probably accounts for why they haven't produced any heavyweights.

It is only certain regions of west africa that produces great big men like Sam Peter.

Algerian, Newfel Ouatah a Super Heavyweight and Egyptian, Mohamed el-Sayed a heavyweight are both good Amateurs and might make good pro's in the future!

Haringey PCC (Amateur club) have sent a team over there to box and have donated a lot of boxing related equipment.
