from boxingtalk..... they're usually pretty accurate!! Good luck to Lockett, but don't fancy his chances much if it comes off...

PAVLIK GETTING SOFT TOUCH FOR JUNE 7
By George Kimball

NEW YORK --- Despite the names you may have been hearing (Giovanni Lorenzo, Randy Griffin, et al), Boxingtalk.com has learned that the short-list for Kelly Pavlik’s June 7 Atlantic City opponent has been winnowed down to a two-man short list – Gary Lockett (30-1) and Marco Antonio Rubio (40-4-1) – and that the Welshman appears go have a nose in front.

Even though Rubio, the 37 year-old Mexican rated No. 4 by the WBC and No. 5 by the WBO, is more of a known quantity to US viewers, HBO has expressed a preference for Lockett to fill the opponent’s role which became vacant once John Duddy sustained multiple cuts in his ill-fated Madison Square Garden “tuneup” bout against Walid Smichet.

Although Lockett has never fought outside Europe, he has won 14 straight since his 2003 loss to unheralded Yuri Tsarenko of Belarus (who was 12-7 at the time), and is somewhat bewilderingly rated No. 1 by the WBO. Facing him now would presumably forestall any nettlesome mandatories, but HBO has another reason for preferring Lockett: Since the 31 year-old from Cwmbran is trained by Enzo Calzaghe, a Pavlik-Lockett matchup might prime the pump for a more lucrative meeting down the road between Pavlik and Enzo’s son Joe, assuming the super-middleweight champion gets by Bernard Hopkins in their non-title fight in Las Vegas next month.

Should Lockett slide into the June 7 title fight, undefeated Irishman Andy Lee will likely face Rubio in the televised co-feature, in what would represent the first installment of a three-bout promotional arrangement Top Rank and Lee manager-trainer Emanuel Steward agreed to last week.

“Obviously, the level of competition is going to be a big step up for Andy,” said Arum. “But if Lee is even three-quarters as good as Emanuel believes he is, then he’s going to be a superstar in the middleweight division.”

Although he would unquestionably represent a step up for Lee, Rubio is hardly invincible. He was knocked out in one round by Kofi Jantuah on the Hopkins-Oscar De La Hoya card in Las Vegas four years ago, and dropped back to back 2006 decisions to Kassim Ouma and Ukranian Zaurbek Baysangurpy. He has since won seven fights on the trot, all of them in Mexico and against relatively undistinguished opposition.

Assuming he gets by Rubio, Lee’s next Top Rank fight would likely be against a contender atop a September Boxing After Dark card.

Arum said he had no objection whatsoever to Lee’s already-scheduled March 21 ESPN2 main event against Brian Vera or to a tentative date atop an April club-fight card in Detroit, but one casualty of the arrangement might be Lee’s anticipated return to his hometown in the main event of a proposed May Brian Peters promotion in Limerick.

“Andy is still a young kid and he obviously needs to stay busy,” said the Bobfather, “but May is really too close to the June 7 date, and we wouldn’t want to jeopardize that.”

Less than an hour before Duddy entered the ring against Smichet on Feb. 23, Top rank and Irish Ropes had put the finishing touches on a contract that would have paid the Irishman $1,450,000 for a June 7 Pavlik fight, but Arum suggested that Duddy’s fans shouldn’t hold their breath expecting that fight to happen – and not just because of the multiple injuries Duddy incurred in his disputed majority decision win over the ungainly Tunisian.

Cuts to both his right and left eyelids, as well as a gash below his left eye, are expected to keep Duddy out of action for at least six months, but he may have given up his place in line for longer than that. The whole notion of a Pavlik-Duddy fight at the Garden had been predicated on Duddy’s 5,000-strong hard core New York fan base, but based on the reaction of his once-adoring fans to the Smichet verdict, it is now unclear that the Derry middleweight could still deliver those numbers.

“Duddy looked dreadful,” said Arum. “I don’t know what happened. He may have been overanxious because the Pavlik fight had already been agreed to, and the cuts didn’t help, but what I saw didn’t measure up to a world-class fighter. This guy (Smichet) wasn’t the fastest fighter in the world, but he was able to hit Duddy with everything he threw.”

“I told (Duddy’s) people that before Kelly could even consider fighting him, I’d have to see him fight and beat a credible opponent first,” added Arum. “Right now I couldn’t even talk about a Pavlik-Duddy fight with a straight face. Even discussing it would be a disservice to Kelly Pavlik.”

I saw that too. Lockett and then Duddy is pretty poor IMO.

The Arthur Abraham fight needs to happen before Pavlik moves up, imo.

That sounds good to me. Pavlik can get Lockett out of the way and as I said about 2 weeks ago, there is the Calzaghe (Warren, Enzo) subplot that leads to Calzaghe vs Pavlik superfight.

And things seem to be happening with real purpose with potential Pavlik foes Lee and Rubio fighting each other. Cracking stuff.

That and Mayweather Cotto are THE unification fights to be made right now.

Better than Duddy at least I guess.

Lockett needs to tune up on higher level fighters.

I hope Joe never fights Pavlik, Pavlik could get seriously hurt. Not saying that as a fan but the difference In defence and ability Is clear.

I really hope Lockett gets this fight, he has always promised more than he has delivered, perhaps with his power we might just get an upset.

In All seriousness this will be interesting to see how Enzo sends him out as he cannot hope to just box behind the jab and land he needs to get to Pavlik early. The American can and has been hurt early in fights and Lockett in my view punches harder than Taylor and he had him in trouble in the first fight.

If he lets Pavlik get a roll on he cannot win but I don't think its a gimmy if they send him out to jump on the champ.

Tell him its his three round cup final and go hell for leather, he can fight a good pace for three rounds, one of them will be going over and out and its no certainty to be Lockett if he goes for broke.

Yes he could get ko'd in a round, there is also the possibility it turns into a right up and downer for 3 rounds and the yanks take to him and he gets another shot down the line.

Come on Enzo everyone is bigging you up, theres only one way for Lockett to fight this fight and have a chance to win, respectable 7 or 8 rounds stoppage is no good.

Good luck Gary

Lockett is even less worthy than Duddy, he's gonna get absolutely murdered. From his point of view it's a chance in a lifetime, but from a viewers point of view it's a massive mismatch.

How has somebody who's been beaten by Yuri Tsarenko be better than Duddy. This is a guy who's best wins are over Ryan Rhodes and Le Blundell. Say what you want about Duddy but at least he's beaten Eastman and Campas as well as the likes of Lenord Pierre and Anthony Bonsante.

On merit neither of them deserve a shot at Pavlik but if it came down to it I fail to see how Lockett is any more deserving than Duddy.

Lockett would KO Duddy easy. Duddy's people picked those guys at the right time and didn't most think Campas won?

Even that Prince Aaron guy was tagging Duddy easy. Lockett would Ko those guys Duddy Is looking awful against.

Yeah and Lockett at least came back from that loss and won and Improved, Duddy's a hyped up journeyman.

Lockett is a more credible opponent than Duddy, but a lot of people won't see it that way because of his low profile. It's a terrible styles match for him though, and I can see Pavlik getting the KO within a few rounds. He'd have a better chance against Arthur (although I expect he'd lose that too as he's a bit short of world class.) It'd be nice to see him get a decent money fight though, and he could always fight someone like Elcock afterwards in a decent domestic or Euro-level scrap.

If Pavlik fights Lockett/Duddy then they should stick Abraham on the undercard as mentioned previously. Giovanni Lorenzo was mentioned as an opponent and this would set up a fight in the autumn between the two.

Pavlik-Lorenzo and Abraham-Lockett would make more sense.

i think lockett has a punchers chance against pavlik who can be hurt, lockett is a better bet than duddy to cause an upset against pavlik.

Its all about Levels though - Lockett also went the distance vs Powers, Rhodes,

Alot of his KO wins as a Middleweight have come against pretty poor chinned fighters (Blundell) or fighters who are moving up a devision or two (Gilbert Eastman).

Although I agree with your view on him being a harder ask for Pavlik than Duddy - lets see Duddy and Lockett fight each other, thats a fight I want to see.

I personally give Trinidad more of a hope than Lockett

I also had Campas winning. However, I don't think Lockett (or anyone else for that matter) can KO Duddy easily. He sure has one hell of a solid chin and has good recovery when he is stunned.

Good fight from a UK point of view, much better than Duddy, who wouldn't even have a puncher's chance, and Rubio who I last saw unconcious inside a minute.

Lockett could well take an overconfident Pavlik by surprise, fast left hook and looks like he has a real concussive punch in either hand - when he connects cleanly you're in trouble. He may well get mullered, but he's got a good enough chin to make things interesting.

I don't believe Lockett can spring an upset on Pavlik.

Pavlik and Lockett are leagues apart, and the much vaunted power of Lockett was unable to budge or even trouble the suspect Rhodes - Rhodes is still by far the best name on Locketts record.

People are overestimatig Lockett's power far too much.

Took him 7 to Ko Miranda, Miranda had a horrible resume before fighting Abraham considering he was a world level fighter.

Boxing is about levels, as Stu said.

Lockett is in for a mullering if this fight comes off.

Better than Lockett's.

I suppose if Pavlik takes it lightly, forgets to train and then loses an arm during his ringwalk, then Lockett may have a chance.

I just cannot see Pavlik losing this one. A few knockouts at WBU level do not a world-class puncher make. Sure, Pavlik takes a few, but he's landing a few more at the same time. And he IS a world-class puncher. Pavlik inside 6, for my money.

Anyone here know Lockett? Is this 100%??
