I heard several times that Trevor Berbick had a few Mental Health Issues after his Championship defense with Tyson..

He claimed the fight was fixed and there was cheating going on and generally lost the Plot.

Can somebody please elaborate?

i have read abit about that one of his therios was that they put poisen in the aircon in the hotel he was staying in he rambles on alot.... much like granberry i suppose

What else is new. Holmes made excuses for his loss to Mike, Tubbs did... its not easy to explain away your rubbery legs.

Carl Williams also complained about the stoppage in his fight with Tyson, so that's four Tyson title opponents in the 80's that I can think of who complained about their fight with him. I'm sure some of the others did; though I doubt Michael Spinks and Frank Bruno were among them. Again, excuse making in boxing is typical, so what else is new. And I agree with the fact that Berbick was a strange guy to begin with.

I read a rambling but highly entertaining interview with Berbick some years after the Tyson fight. Amongst other things he came out with the air-con poison stuff, that his food was tampered with and even that he plain threw the fight, saying that no punch connected with him and that he fell down three times to show everybody what he was forced to do. Not sure who forced him to do this. It looked like a left hook to the temple to me, but what do I know. He also claimed that he was robbed when he fought Holmes and that he was about to knock Holmes out but someone rang the bell early. I don't recall this happening either.

Just prior to failing his brain scan which stopped him from fighting he was going around saying he had a contract with Don King for some 'really big fights'...

Trevor Berbick long before the Tyson fight was a bizarre eccentric man, prone to giving very strange interviews and such. He was just a big, scary oddball who sometimes dangerous to be around.

During his comebacks he alleged to have a video version of theTyson fight thatproved the kayo blow didn't connect, or because they pumped his room full of poison gas, or because they poisoned his food, or because Don King told him he had to lose the fight but he would get a rematch later.

Basically Berbick couldn't handle the way he lost the fight and his belt and never got over it. He also claimed they rang the bell early at the end of the 7th v Holmes because he had him 'out' with a left hook. Another story again that doesn't stand up to scrutiny if you watch the tape.

Its all basically nutty excuses from a life long slightly deranged violent guy who had a lot of very good wins but couldn't take losing to Tyson or Holmes.

Berbick never was quite a man to begin with who was completely on balance; case in point, his rape case of telling a woman that God would understand that he needed sex because he was a preacher...

I met Trevor many times in the eighties - he used to have Hank Kaplan as his adviser and he would listen but not do anything that was suggested.

Excentric, yes and also bizarre like overhand right stated. Sigmund Freud would have loved him.

Also cheap. He would spar with amateurs so he would not have to pay them.

Has Big Trev's street fight with Holmes been covered?

Here's a brief report from someone:

It occurred in the street in front of Miami’s Diplomat Hotel in April 1991. Larry Holmes was answering questions at a press conference following his first-round KO of Tim “Doc” Anderson. With Berbick in the audience, Holmes was asked if he would fight Berbick as part of his comeback campaign. Holmes replied that – having already defeated Berbick ten years earlier – he did not consider him a suitable opponent, adding “I do not like him or respect him."

After Holmes left the press conference, an angry – and rambling - Berbick blamed Holmes for using “Jenny from Jacksonville” to sabotage Berbick’s marriage. Shortly thereafter, Holmes confronted Berbick in front of the hotel and punches were exchanged ... but that wasn’t the end of it.

After police separated the two ex-champs, Berbick was explaining what had happened when Holmes – wearing a jogging suit – came charging over a car and dropped Berbick with an awkward, feet-first flying leap. The two ex-champs scuffled briefly before police again separated them. No arrests were made … and Holmes-Berbick II never materialized.

It was not a proud moment for either Holmes or Berbick.

I still consider it unofficially the greatest sports moment ever --- that of Holmes, dressed vaguely like MC Hammer, damaging some poor sod's car (Holmes was quite heavy at this point in his career) &, "judo-kick!" to Berbick's head.

The marriage of indignity, stupidity & genuine anger make it a comedic masterpiece, in my book

trevor came to live in halifax when he was 19 or 20. early in his career he even had problems then. some stories were never told and some were covered up.
