WIRES CROSSED FOR HAYE AND MACCARINELLI

By Mark Staniforth, PA Sport

The build-up to Britain's biggest fight for 15 years threatened to descend into farce today as Enzo Maccarinelli and David Haye arrived two hours apart for the same scheduled press conference at London's O2 Arena.

With Haye's seat empty, the show's promoter allegedly held court with Maccarinelli at shortly after 12.30pm and accused the world cruiserweight champion of being in breach of contract.

Haye duly showed up for what he claimed was the contracted start time of 2.30pm - when, with Maccarinelli long gone and the press conference room stripped, he gave his own version of events in the Arena foyer.

He had never agreed to the earlier start time because of his sleeping pattern, bearing in mind the defence of his WBC and WBA cruiserweight titles is due to begin at 2.30am on Sunday.

Haye, tight at the weight and needing every extra hour he can find, also questioned Friday's weigh-in by insisting he would stick to the original time of 4pm - despite Warren's insistence it will go ahead at 7pm.

With television paymasters Setanta and Showtime having scheduled live programmes for the later time, Haye's manager Adam Booth was locked in talks with British Boxing Board of Control general secretary Simon Block.

Haye said: "We agreed certain things in the contract, and now they are changing. It's no secret I'm big at the weight, and in an ideal world I'd have the weigh-in as early as possible. But obviously they want to push it back.

"His people are getting desperate. They're worried because they realise I'm in the best shape of my life. They've been hearing from the gyms that big world-ranked heavyweights have been getting smashed to pieces."

Warren retorted: "He's in breach of contract, and I've made a complaint already to the Boxing Board of Control. They've got to determine whether there is a breach of contract and what his obligations are.

"It's all very mystifying to me. I'm paying him an absolute fortune, and he should show some respect not only to the promotion but to Enzo Maccarinelli. He's come down from Wales today - and this fellow lives in London."

This is more than the usual pre-fight hype, with most of the 18,000 tickets already sold for a fight which is being called the biggest in this country since the rematch between Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn.

Haye looked completely unflustered when he finally arrived and maintained that, despite recent weight-making concerns, he will be in the shape of his life for this eagerly anticipated unification clash.

He added: "At the end of the day, I'm fully rested - and that's what matters. You're going to get a fully hydrated guy who's ready for war. I'm ready to go - and it's going to be a great, great fight."

Weigh in at 7pm? Tactical maneuvering?

I don't like it but Warren is doing his job isn't he, trying to get any little advantage for his man.

All par for the course, Warren tries to get advantage for his man, but obviously Haye is having absolutely none of it. Alternatively, it was never set for 2 p.m. and Haye is taking the piss to try and rile Warren and more importantly Enzo Mac.

This fight has always been Haye v Warren for me ;-)

Haye has done more than enough in the build up for this fight. He is regularly on TV, radio and online promoting.

Warren knew before hand Haye wasnt gonna attend at 12.30.. and in the end, the fact that Haye didnt turn up till 14.30 has generated more column inches than if he would have got there on time!!!

Where is the problem? ;-)

Interesting to read about the weigh in time too.. presumably that is in the contract so we will see what happens tomorrow..

If the weight in is in the contract, then I expect the board to back Warren up.

However, what is Warren going to do, pull Enzo out?

When you consider that the Calzaghe-Kessler weigh-in was held at 2pm ahead of their Showtime-televised, late starter fight...I'd say yes. The weigh-in should be at 2pm. There's no reason why it should be at 7pm.
Whatever, Warren's been banking on Haye's 'words' from day one.

Am I wrong in thinking that a promoter's job is to push a fight and sell tickets, as opposed to manufacturing advantages for one fighter or the other?

I'm not naive enough to believe it doesn't happen, and I completely understand and appreciate it, but is it right? Does DLH try and get advantages for his fighters, or does he just promote match cards?

Fwanky has Enzo tied down to a contract though.

Haye is only on board for this one bout.

Still, Fwanky and his crew have been running Haye(and anyone else who isn't signed to them) into the ground over the years. It's funny to see him getting all worked up at Haye's antics.

In an ideal world 'promoters' would promote events and fights only, with no interest (financial or otherwise) in either of the fighter involved; their sole remit would be to put together the best event possible for the paying public.

Sadly in boxing it doesnt work like that. The promoter usually has ties to one of the parties involved, so it is in the promoter's interest to gain any advantage he can for the 'house' fighter.

This is not just true of FW - it counts for all promoters, Golden Boy included.

The rules of the WBC and WBA and for that matter the WBO forbid a 4pm weigh-in for a fight that is some 34hrs later. The rules re between 24 and 30 hrs of fight time. Haye is lucky it's not 2am on Saturday so FW can hardly be accused of skullduggery can he when he's already gone 1hr outside the rules by agreement with the bodies involved.

Rules is rules and fair is fair.

As Eubank says- the fighters work for the promoters, not the other way round..

If Haye signed for a 7pm weigh-in then he should sign in at 7pm....BUT if he doesn't - what is Fwank going to do?

Maybe Hayes legal peopl have looked into this and KNOW they can get around it, what are they going to do? strip him of the titles?

If those are the rules, that's fair enough. Why, though, did Calzaghe and Kessler weigh in at 2pm before their 2am fight? The WBC/WBA and WBO titles were on the line there, too, weren't they?

I'm confused still.

And if rules are rules- have you just admitted that Warren is blatantly breaking them by one hour?

Why, then, were these rules not applied to Calzaghe-Kessler?
