I am not an expert on their best weights, although, I believe they were fairly close in size. So, consider the best weight at which this fight could have happened.

For me, a very tough call.

I pick Kosta for a KO but, I wouldn't bet the farm on it.

I think Chavez stops him in the late rounds.

I cannot for the life of me see Tszyu beating the young, hungry Chavez. Tszyu was never the kind of one-shot hitter Foreman or Hearns were, though at Jr. Welter he was a very good (just not great) puncher. He was remarkably consistent, aged excellently, & was very adept (not given enough credit) for his tactical capacity --- he knew what it was to seek & expose weaknesses in the opposition, as I made mention of in the Mosley-Tszyu hypothetical.

Even so, Chavez can absorb everything in Tszyu's arsenal (& more, I'd be willing to bet), but he can outwork Tszyu whilst doing it. Tszyu often had his elbows held wide, failing to tuck them in. Chavez would turn those ribs into soup, & this would be the foundation for a late, corner-induced stoppage. Tszyu bravely stays on his feet during a particularly savage beating endured in the tenth (by far, the most one-sided round of the fight), but his corner don't let him come out for anything more.

Well here I go again sticking up for the russian/aussie. Betting on him and feeling certain in this case to collect. I think the quitting on the stool moment has introduced an element that is being extrapolated beyond any sensibility.

I think he could be the man to KO Chavez in his prime. But since they fought at a time when it was a bit lopsided in terms of prime it may be held against Kostya on a sentiment basis.

Just an opinion...and I know Chavez fans are pretty loyal. I don't mean any disrespect I just think this would be the outcome.

Tzsyu might win several rounds and even be ahead, but a prime Chavez is unhurtable and has one of the best body attacks in history. He'd gradually wear Tzsyu down with his body punching and score a KO somewhere between the 8th and 10th rounds.

Very hard fight to pick, but I would lean towards a Tszyu late stoppage. Kostya's speed was really underated in his eariler career and it really diminished after his injuries / lay-off. JCC epitimised the Mexican warrior, but was also very clever in which (in his prime) rarely got caught flush. Chavez was primed in 90 IMO and Tszyu in 98. I just think Tszyu's mauradering style would break Chavez down and finish him late in a really close and ROUGH fight.

Thing about Chavez is I thought he was at his best at 130 and 135 and at 140 his power wasn't quite as effective and he started slowing a little, but he was still an incredible force in his late prime and post-prime at the weight. I pretty much agree with Goodnight, Chavez stops Tszyu late with that constant assault he used to just maul opponents with. Chavez was pretty much the definition of a guy who you didn't want to war with not just cause he hit like a sledgehammer, but cause he'd take massive shots without so much as flinching and then keep coming after you.

A prime Chavez had the style to beat Tzsyu constant pressure a great chin and wouldn't give Kostya and space to throw his straight right. Chavez win TKO late.

Is this hypothetical pound for pound? If so I see the sense in the response's of folks. But in their primes Tszyu is two weight classes about Chavez.

I based my response on a Prime LWW Chavez, as in the best years of his LWW career versus Tszyu's own best LWW years (easy since he only ever fought there).

At JWW, Chavez half killed Meldrick Taylor and Hector Camacho, while Tszyu got stopped by Vince Phillips and almost stopped in the 1st by Diosbelys Hurtado. The thought of Kosta Tszyu stopping a prime Julio Cesar Chavez is plain laughable. Quite alot of disrespect on here lately for one of the greatest fighters who ever lived. I mean it only took him till his 91st fight before someone even dropped him.

I have no disrespect for Chavez or Tszyu. I'm just inclined to go with Kostya on this hypothetical prime matchup. I can clearly understand why I might be in the minority viewpoint.
