Oh dear. Andy Lee's bubble has just burst.

I am hearing it was a premature stoppage but he shouldnt be getting into any sort of trouble with the Vera's of this world..

lee fought poor tonight, but it was a bad stoppage. i had him winning every round bar one (and the one that it ended in). vera took a lot of lefts. ref jumped in and saved him but it's not a disaster. he'll be back, but it's a blow

After all the Manny Stewart hype, the Carl Daniels highlight reel KO, the amatuer pedigree and the mystique embodied in the Kronk Gold, I have to admit I expected more from Lee.

I guess all the talk of fighting Winky Wright will subside now for a while?

With Dunne, Duddy and now Lee getting exposed in recent times its a bad patch for Ireland's most heavily hyped prospects

In a colossal upset, The Contender's Brian Vera (16-1, 10 KOs) scored a totally unexpected seventh round TKO over previously unbeaten middleweight prospect Andy Lee (15-1, 12 KOs) on Friday night before a shocked audience at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Lee, who had been hyped as the future of the middleweight division, looked like he would have a short night when he dropped Vera in round one. The game Vera, however, came back to hurt Lee in round two and and showed an incredible ability to take a punch as he literally wore down Lee with his tenacity. Vera finally got the stoppage win with a barrage of clean shots in round seven. Time was 2:17. Although there was no question that Vera was having a huge round, the stoppage by referee Tony Chiarantano seemed premature as the fatigued and bloodied Lee was still punching back. Still it was a tremendous accomplishment by Vera against all odds.

Ricky was just interviewed and has clearly been at the Guinness whilst in Ireland to support his old mate Macklin - he was slurring his words badly!

Andy Murray got a run out and his opponent retired on the stool. Mike Perez looks good in parts and lazy in others on his way to a 6 rnd pts win.

Now for the main event - it promises to be a cracker!

I was but it froze halfway through the 2nd round of the Murray fight and I couldn't get it back up again until now!

Hatton has had a few to many lol. lets hope it isnt like his last trip over to Dublin when he spent a further 2 wks in the hotel on the booze before he returned home. some one might want to tell him he has a fight on the 24th May lol.

Was it just me or did Murray not look 100% tonight? I know he won but he looked slower than usual, maybe down to the late opponent change of that but be just didnt seem to be himself, though it was a good display of boxing it just didnt seem to be the Andy we have seen before.

Perez - was he playing to get rnds in? or did he just get tires after a few? He knocked the russian in the 1st but seemed to slow up then, I put it down to him looking for some ring experience in befoer his next few fights.

Lee's had a lot of smoke blown up his arse recently and one wonders if he started believing his own hype. He was all smiles during the introductions and maybe got a bit complacent.

Anyhow, from what I've seen he's nothing better than a good tall boxer with half-decent dig, but who doesn't move his head. Not the second-coming of Tommy Hearns as Emmanuelle Steward seemed to be making him out to be.

He's not even the second coming of Mark Breland if he's getting knocked about by the likes of Vera (no disrespect, an honest pro and that's a great result for him).

Macklin boxed well from what i saw as i fell asleep before round 5! Murray was workmanlike but probably deflated after Gorman withdrew. Lothian was a decent replacement.

Perez was mindful of punching himself out i think rather than knowing he could finish it at any point.

Macklin boxed to orders against Campas as he moved, jabbed and slipped much of what was coming his way, showing defensive nuances not previously exploited thus far in his pro career.

Matt’s hand speed appeared improved, as he was generally looser and less inclined to load up with his power shots then was the case in past fights.

When Macklin did sit down to trade he was sure not to stay in one place for too long; in close was where Campas had most of his success with hooking shots.

All in all it was a balanced and well executed, if somewhat conservative, performance by the Brummie. His few weeks under McGirt’s tutelage had clearly not been wasted.

The 3 horse race between Lee, Duddy and Macklin has been blown wide open by recent events. As things stand I would not bet against Macklin coming out on top if all 3 were to meet in a round robin tournament for superiority on the Emerald Isle.

I look forward to future performances and wait to see what else Buddy can add to his game.

Macklin is better than Duddy and Lee. I think him suffering his setbacks well before them has seasoned him. Allowed him to learn bit by bit. He's done better than Duddy vs Campas and Furlan. Now, instead of fighting Duddy leftovers...well how about pushing Matt forward and giving him the guys that have set back Duddy and Lee. How about having him beat up Smichet and/or Vera? Dunne, Duddy and Lee have all had disasters. Macklin deserves his time at the centre stage. Would love to see him go the EBU route as well - those Germans are beatable, Asikainen, Sylvester and co.

Then let's see if he can make it to a Pavlik fight, because if Duddy and Lee were good enough to manufacture, so is Macklin.

How come the promoters don't want to push Macklin ahead of the pack - he's clearly the best m/w in Ireland - and give his profile a massive boost for fights vs Vera & Smichet? IMO he wouldn't have too many problems as he has a sensible style, makes his shots count more these days and learned a lot post-Moore probably.

I thnk you are making too many assumptions there AB to be honest.

What tells you Brian Peters doesnt want to push Macklin to the head of the pack?

Remember he is rebuilding after a shattering loss, in a new weight div with a new trainer - he is a student of the game and knows what's what.

The match with Campas was shrewd and timely to force comparisons with Duddy.

I am sure Team Macklin would take a fight with Duddy tomorrow but Duddy's people are (rightly) persuing a world title fight for their man.

There is a wide range of options for Macklin - he can look to force a fight with either Lee or Duddy for supremacy in Ireland OR he can use his Birmingham base to chase after the winner of Elcock v McDermott OR he can use his stateside connections to raise his profile in the USA.

Personally I would like to see him take on the Elcock v McDermott winner and then look to fight Lee or Duddy in Dublin, New York or Boston.

Macklin needs a few more fights to 'bed in' with McGirt and confirm his retooling as a smart thinking box-fighter; he is in no immediate rush to sign up for a career defining fight IMO.

The world is his oyster and that terrifying fight with Moore just might turn out to be the best thing that ever happened to him. At least, here is hoping

All I'm saying is, he could beat the Smichets and Veras of the world AND get big attention in Ireland in the process. OK it'd be a bit at the expense of Duddy and Lee, but if they have to go back to the drawing board why not? Macklin has surely learned his hard lesson from the Moore fight.

Smichet and Vera only looked hard to beat because Duddy and Lee made hard work of it. Look at who fighters like Pavlik were taking on when younger than MM is now, Zuniga, McKart, Zertuche.

It looks like he is being fed Duddy-scraps at the moment which is sad as Macklin has a way better style than Duddy and Lee, both of whom were, to use a phrase I hate, "exposed." Just trying to see the bigger picture.

In a few years, I would LOVE to see Barker vs Macklin. Maybe for something like a European title. They definitely are good enough. These 2 can lift middleweight from the doldrums of UK boxing
