MIKE GOMEZ – Boxes Baz Carey in Glasgow on Saturday evening and is looking to shed some anger out of his system which has been brewing since Lee McCallister withdrew from their WBU lightweight title fight due on the same night. McAllister’s team have not come back with a contract for the fight to happen in the future and therefore it is now dead in the water , we shall look at other title options we have been offered after this fight on Saturday.

As far as I understand it, McAllister &/or his team pulled out of the Gomez team just so's they could fight for a WBU title at 140lb? Is this the case? F'ing mad if it is.

Once-beaten Scot Lee McAllister continues his rise through the ranks when he takes on experienced Ghanaian Kpakpo Allotey in a 12-rounder later this month in Aberdeen (March 29). McAllister, who hails from the Granite City and enjoys big support, scored his biggest win there in October: a nine-round stoppage of Glasgow's Craig Docherty. That was at lightweight; this one is up at light-welterweight against a man stopped by the same Docherty in six rounds in Glasgow in 2004, although it looked a tad premature. Allotey came back in 2006 and was outscored in a bruising 12-rounder by Willie Limond for the vacant Commonwealth lightweight title. Ayr stylist Dave Stewart also outscored him (more easily) in 10-rounder in Nottingham a few weeks later. Clearly, Allotey is well-used to Scots on these shores. Back home in Accra, he's won three on the spin since Stewart.
McAllister is on a long winning run since useful Midlander Dean Hickman outpointed him in a six-rounder in July 2003 (in the Midlands), including 10-round decisions over Blackpool's Jeff Thomas and Ghanaian Ben Odamattey and an eight-round stoppage of Glenrothes man Stuart Green for the Scottish lightweight title. After his big win over Docherty last time out, McAllister was due to step up again on this show against Manchester's former WBO No. 1 Michael Gomez in a lightweight 12-rounder, but he opted to move up instead, which makes you wonder. Allotey is tough and brave but a bit of a slapper; Gomez presented much more of a threat.
Still, the Ingles-managed McAllister is a handful, with plenty of movement, good workrate and decent if not outstanding power. Allotey takes a shot, anyway, so expect a long, hard fight. Expect McAllister to emerge on points.
