I always used to think an exhibition bout would include large gloves and headgear, in recent years I've seen old fights like Louis-Valentino and Foreman-Ballard where the loser has received a painful looking hammering, did they used to use large gloves or were they just called exhibitions in case the name fighter was beaten or something?

Today they use large gloves and fight 12 rounds and call it a "championship" fight.

Today boxers today DO use ten ounce gloves in title fights and they DO fight a distance of 12 rounds in title fights.

But in boxrec 'moderator' buzz' mind (?) to state those basic facts "devalues" boxrec.

Perhaps 'moderator' buz should post a list of comments on boxing which are 'acceptable' on boxrec.

I believe that to be the case, ever since the introduction of gloves. When championship bouts were using 3 ounce gloves, the old-timers considered gloves of any thicker substance to be anything but for serious bouts. as time wore on, then they instituted that anything higher than 8 or 10 ounce gloves were strictly for amatuer/sparring/exhibition purposes. I think headgear was always an option, that or chest guards.
