The official decision was a draw; however, that is one of the worst decisions that I've ever seen. It should have been a clear UD for Whitaker in my opinion. Don't forget that a prime Duran lost to De Jesus a good but not great fighter. Whitaker was by far a better fighter than De Jesus.Diamond WEAPON wrote:Whitaker is overrated, he drew against a past-prime and blown up Chavez who was COMING UP in weight. Duran was in his prime as a LW all the way until the 2nd Leonard fight, then he started slipping. Duran would've given him a pounding.
Yes, I agree... I just get a lil carried away when it comes to Whitaker, I think way too many people praise him more than he actually deserves and it aggravates me.pete wrote:I never liked Whitaker and I love Duran but I doubt any lightweight would give Whitaker a "pounding".I do think Duran would beat him in a close decision because at 135 Duran had very fast hands, fast enough that he wouldn't be at such a speed disadvantage many of Whitaker's opponents were.
Then Duran came back and beat the living shit out of De Jesus twice when he was more developed into his prime... Whitaker lost to Ramirez too, and he wasn't as good as Duran, we can go back and forth with this shit. I simply believe Duran to be the greater of the two and I can easily see how the Whitaker-Chavez fight could be scored as it was. Even Sports Illustrated had it as a Draw despite their cover bitching about the decision. I thought Whitaker was much closer to his prime than Chavez by that point too. Chavez was at his best from 130-135 and in his first couple years at 140, then he started sliding, starting with his speed/reflexes. After their fight Whitaker had a few fights and won another title at another weight (154) and Chavez split fights with Frankie Randall, a guy he definitely wouldn't have lost to in his more glorious years.Borinken25 wrote:The official decision was a draw; however, that is one of the worst decisions that I've ever seen. Bullshit, Esteban DeJesus would have stayed or beaten any lightweight in history. He was a very, very good fighter...excellent technician and courageous boxer.Borinken25 wrote:The official decision was a draw; however, that is one of the worst decisions that I've ever seen.
