This statement from Joe was very well publicised in the immediate aftermath of Mayweather/Hatton, and has been ever since.

hey come on stp, i must admit i dont personally like or put myself out to watch calzage fights as i dont like his style, but how can you not respect and admire his achievments. must admit though this time i cant wait for the hopkins fight. strangely the wifes his biggest fan!

triple weight ABA champion undefeated in about 15 years with a comfortable win against Kessler. Getting heavily floored then not just getting up actually stopping your opponent in the very next round..................yeah...........rubbish eh

Just watched Calzaghe/Kessler again.

Bernard Hopkins is going to win this fight guys. he's going to show the sort of lateral movement that Kessler couldn't and Joe won't be able to deal with it. Calzaghe will be chasing the fight for the full 12 and Hopkins will be picking him off. Calzaghe will get wild as the fight slips away, you can count on it. Landing on Kessler and landing on hopkins are 2 different things. He may pull it back late rounds but it won't be enough.

couldent predict with confidence a winner, but im sure if joe dosent prevail hell go out on his shield, and not with a wimper, so fight should be worth watching. one thing about calzaghe is he always seems better in the big ones and always finds a way to win, and just dosent seem to believe he can be beat, on this and hopkins age i edge slightly towards joe.

I can totally see the case for a Hopkins win. If Calzaghe doesn't get his timing 100% right I think we could be in for a really close one - the major thing in his armoury is that he has a great chin or I'd think a late Hopkins stoppage was a good bet.
Still, on balance gotta go for UD Calzaghe, not sure how much of that is heart talking.

I respect and admire any professional boxer who has a winning record, let alone wins a world title. That is exceptional stuff.

But suddenly going from the joke of boxing (on both sides of the pond) to the king of boxing (on both sides of pond) for beating Jeff Lacy and Mikkel Kessler doesn't add up in my book. I'm not like you lot, pathetic little fan-boys who get sucked into anything.

Calzaghe used to be grossly underrated, but now he's grossly overrated.

Hopkins was supposed to sign to fight Calzaghe, I forget the amount, but something like 5 million dollars. Then at the last minute, Nard demands DOUBLE the amount agreed in contracts.

Who did he fight instead, Morade Hakkar i seem to recall, for something like 700,000 dollars.

Spot on. I think the original amount was $2million and on the day of signing he asked for double.

Calzaghe has excellent lateral movement himself, watch his fight with Lacy, Calzaghe used the ring excellently. Nard is sneaky, no doubt about it, but how many shots is he going to throw, and how many is he going to land.

So Calzaghe, a long reigning 168 lb champion, was no more than Morade Hakkar to the Americans - really? How come there was enough interest to pay Hopkins $2million, as opposed to the 700,000 he got for fighting Hakkar.

Joe's only fights ever on American TV at that point were Veit 1 on Shobox and McIntosh and Brewer on Showtime delay. McIntosh was a Tyson undercard.

While you are right BHOPs I think was getting a large chunk of his purse taken by management and there was 1-2 fights elft and he wanted to hold out at middleweight for the Delahoya fight, which he did manage to get

This gets me thinking what a truly Super-Fight this would be in 2001-2003 before 'Nard got old

Yet he was still worth an offer of $2million to Hopkins.

Well, Sky and Warren dug into their pockets for 10 years and Calzaghe has A LOT to thank them for. He made around £6million pre-Lacy, for fighting once a year against Tocker Pudwill in front of 1,700 people at Cardiff Ice Rink.
