Worst performance by a referee

I was thinking of examples of bad refereeing, specifically the referee in the Hatton-Tszyu fight.

I think the worst performance by a referee that I can think of was the ref in the Hearns-Andries fight. That guy was an idiot. He let Andries take way too much punishment. During one of the knock downs he pulled Hearns out of the neutral corner and sent him to his own corner, rather than vice versa. And he did a few other things that I don't remember right at the moment. I wonder how he could have possibly gotten that job.

Walcott in Ali-Liston II has come up recently... of course.

Jay Nady was bad in a few, particularly Tito-Vargas.

Too many to count.

Lawerence Cole in Lacierva/Caballero. That guy should definately get a new job, that fight was very dirty and he did pretty close to nothing.

Also when Lawerence Cole TOLD MARQUEZ HE WAS WINNING THE FIGHT, had to be one of the most incompetant performances by a ref in recent memory.

Yeah, I remember the one with Marquez. That was bad.

John O'Brien, who refereed Valuev-Barrett, is a freaking sadist. That guy should be banned for life for some of the beatings I've seen him let fighters take, including Barrett in that fight.

How about the ref in Holmes-Cobb...

At least he rid boxing of Cosell...

The ref in Marciano-Cockell must have been Rocky's cousin.

what happened in that fight...? The ref told one of the fighters that he was winning ? can you explain what happened ?

Thanks

If I remember right Marquez was cut and they were thinking of stopping it and going to the cards (?), and the ref told Marquez he was winning, but Marquez, to his credit, said he wanted to keep going and the the fight continued. If that's not exactly right I'm sure gsn will correct me.

How about Joey Curtis in the first Dokes/Weaver bout? A super quick stoppage and he was first to the celebration party. Smacked of Don King's interest in the bout.

i think it was lawrence cole in the rocky gannon-some guy from louisana fight. i also saw an old espn fight where the ref. kept calling a slip when the guy was clearly knocked down, finally he couldn't continue. that was really funny

I always thought Richard Steele was a bit skiddish in the ring, calling fights off practically on a sneeze; though I must admit, last few bouts I seen him do, he's been doing more of a better job.

Jay Nady in any fight where both fighters aren't from the USA.

Tony Perez for getting in too late for both Cooney-Norton and Mercer-Morrison. We'll put his hearing the bell incident in the second Ali-Frazier fight down as something else.

Already mentioned, but Eddie Cotton in Lewis-Tyson was terrible. He was so scared of Tyson going ape shit again that he went totally over the top in protecting him and victimising Lewis. Not that it mattered in the end.

Carlos Padilla has had some shockers, particularly allowing Ocasio and Richard Sandoval to take way more than they should against Holmes and Canizales respectively. And when he stopped Terrence Alli against Chavez, apparently because Chavez had decided he'd had enough of punching him.

Richard Steele was awful, at his worst. Had some terrible performances.

They should have shot Cotton for his effort in Lewis-Tyson. I actually was warned twice & almost bodily ejected from a pub as I watched. I was screaming & cursing at the big screen. Couldn't believe the bullshit I was seeing.

From the history books, Jack Welch's performance in Ad Wolgast v. Mexican Joe Rivers.

Ruby Goldstein was sometimes slow to stop a fight: He let Patterson take an unnecessary beating from Ingo (7 knockdowns), and his failure to stop Griffin-Paret III had tragic consequences.

In Goldstein's defence, Paret was a known foxer, though. I still agree with the notion he was at fault, just mentioning a fact about Paret that is often overlooked.

Don't forget, just prior to that he allowed Wilfredo Gomez to put an inhuman thumping on Derrick Holmes. Holmes was down about 8 times, yet he immediately stops Dokes-Weaver.

Also, how about Steve Smoger. During Lance Whitaker and Lou Savarese, Lou goes down and while Smoger is counting him, the mic is so close you hear him stop between 7 & 8 and tells Lou to get up.

Also, the ref who allowed Eddie Machen to take a merciless beating in the corner from Ingo Johannson. This is on Youtube. Watch it to see what I'm talking about.

Also, the ref in the first Juan Coggi-Eder Gonzalez fight, who should have just been jailed on the spot if it wasn't for the fact that the jailers were also pulling for Coggi.

Ramon Berumen for hijacking the title from Armando Muniz for his buddy Jose Napoles.

Stan Berg for his ego-driven attempts to be in the limelight at all times. Note the cheers from the crowd during his Lennox Lewis-Jerry Goff fight where he gets clocked and dropped for posing too long.

And my No. 1, Carlos Padilla, who has to go down in history as the most indecisive referee ever, yet always got the call for the big fights.

Juan Manuel Marquez had a bad cut from a accidental headbutt against Jimrex Jaca, and Cole attended him to the doctor and he literally asked him: "Your winning the fight, do u want to continue", Marquez looked like he didn't pay attention and continued fighting and later won by TKO. But a lesser fighter would've said no and would've taken the win. Cole got suspended for several months for it (even though he reffed a championship fight in Europe and was eerlily quiet) WHat a numbskull referee.

This thread reminds me of a funny referee story.
A freind of mine named Tony Fritz who was a good amateur but had a tough time in the pros, was fighting Julius Noble here in Chicago.
Julius hit Tony with shot and Tony went down hard. Real hard. He badly broke his leg and it looked terrible. Fans at ringside were aghast.
Anyways, the referee at the time Stan Berg who was a good referee and a fine man, walked over looked down and said" son..... Im afraid Im going to have to stop the fight."
Tony looked up and said "thats a good idea."
