We had a thread like this once, almost everybody said Sam Langford's nickname of "The Boston Tar Baby" was the best alias in ring history.

For me, though Tommy Morrison didn't live up to the hype, "THE DUKE" is no doubt the most famous nickname of all time, albiet due to John Wayne.

It may not be the best, but I love, "The Atomic Bull." Shame that wasn't reserved for a great fighter. Another favourite of mine is Mickey Walker's, "Toy Bulldog" tag.

There was a fighter from way back when (a Lightweight, I think?) named Stanley Yoakem, who was famous for absorbing punishment & bleeding everywhere, & hence he became Stanley "Soak 'Em" Yoakem

Well, The Duke was Morrison's great-uncle, so I guess if anybody could use the hickname without too much recrimination, it was Tommy . . .

Tommy Ryan once said the only thing "mysterious" about Bill was how he would foul you next. He may have been the dirtiest fighter in ring history.

Ryan also said once that he finished one fight with Smith without a mark on his face, but his shoulders and shins were bloody. Billy, you see, bit him on the shoulders and raked the instep of his shoe against Ryan's shins in the clinches!

There's something about 'sugar' & boxing.

It's so apt; even more so when one of the greatest boxers that ever lived was known as such.
