Good chance of some medals on both sides of the sea I would say

Stephen Smith lost to an Italian fighter and will not be going. No word yet on David Price, who has a great shot but did have a tough Romanian opponent today.

Price beat Ciocan, making it eight for Great Britain, to go along with five for Ireland.

Which British boxers have qualified for the games, and who has a decent chance of a medal?

The only one I know about is Frankie Gavin.

Frankie Gavin, James Degale and Khalid Saeed are the most capable of medalling, ut I don't know if they will.

The others are Joseph Murray, Bradley Saunders, Billy Joe Saunders, Tony Jeffries, and David Price.

Billy Joe Saunders seems to be improving rapidly and I think could make some noise at 69kg, which is not a stacked division.

The Cubans weren't at the world championships, fear of defections apparently, after a few of their fighters have gone missing recently on trips abroad.

Gavin did very well to beat the Russian, Tischenko, though.

One of the questions that has to be asked in any weight class is who is in it for Cuba and Russia, although the Cuban team has been severely weakened by defections and should be much less of a tiger than usual.

The Cuban fighter in Gavin's division, Yordenis Ugas, is pretty good though but did not compete at the World Championships in Chicago. The Russian, Alexey Tishchenko was considered to be one of the best amateurs in the world and won the gold at 57kg in 2004 - but Gavin beat him at the World Championships. Those three should be the favorites.

I saw the final. He looked pretty slick.

Im sure we have some other mixed-race guy (sorry, I honestly don't know his name) who many seemed to be touting as a world class prospect. I think this was back at the last commonwealth games.

Yordenis Ugas is amazing. I remember seeing Amir Khan destroy him in the World Juniors, but Khan was a different class as an amateur.

Ugas will win Olympic Gold, I'm sure of it.

You're talking about James Degale at middleweight. Yes, he's good. Generally he fails to perform in the major tournaments, but he DID qualify, and I thought he wouldn't because of his failure to perform, so he could medal. Middle is a strong division however, so we'll see.

I tip Emilio Correa Bayeaux (CUB) for gold at middleweight. Darren Sutherland could also medal, even though he was beaten by Degale in the last qualifier, he'd previously beaten Degale three times before that. Generally he's tougher than Degale, but Degale probably makes a better amateur. Sutherland is a former Brendan Ingle graduate, by the way.

Forgot about Korobov. How old is he now? I remember him fighting my friend prior to the last Olympic games in Athens. He was like the second in line behind Gaiderbekov then, however.

JJ Joyce, I like his style and when on form he boxes text book very good technicial boxer.

I tip the English lads to come home with 3 medals, with at least one being of the gold variety

The Irish won't fair so well, and unless there are some very kind draws(and it is all about the draw you get) I cannot see them medalling.

All in all, with these 13 fighters now qualified, we now have a fighter(at least) in every weight division more or less, to cheer

Not a chance imo - out of the Irish and British teams only Frankie has a chance of a medal - again thats oimo

Outside chance for Murray - cant see any Irish fighter getting a medal - thats if you dont consider Murray and Gavin as Irish (both 2nd gen)

Billy Joe will turn a few heads at the Olympics. Has the talent to capture a medal.

Big David Price will be a tough fight for any Super Heavy and given the right draw, can also medal.

Frankie Gavin(English in my eyes Sligo I'am afraid! ) has a great chance of medalling, but then again it's all down to the draw.

I won't make the mistake of writing them off toom soon again. this time last year I didn't think GB and Ireland would have 3 fighters at Beijing between them, let alone 13!

Medalling is a totally different ball game to qualifying I know, but again, given the right draw, the talent is there to capture 3 medals I reckon.

Will be good to see it all unfold.

13 fighters to follow is going to be quality.

Korobov is still only 25, and of course Gaiderbekov won a gold medal himself. Korobov has been bullet-proof lately, having won the last two World Championships, and he was hardly challenged at all in Chicago.
