Although Minnesota's Duane Bobick had been heavily defeated by Teofilo Stevenson in the 1972 Olympic semifinals, he seemed to have the potential for success as a professional. A U.S. amateur champion, national Golden Gloves champion and Pan American Games gold medalist, Bobick was strong and willing and inevitably was considered as something of a latter-day white hope.

Bobick piled up a string of wins in carefully matched fights but never really developed much beyond being an earnest plodder. I saw him from ringside in Munich in 1976 when he overpowered the much smaller Jamaican Bunny Johnson on the Muhammad Ali-Richard Dunn show, and reported for the British publication Boxing News that Bobick "does not look ready to be pitched in with the very top contenders."

Revered trainer Eddie Futch did his best to correct technical flaws and, after 38 wins in a row and just a year after the fight in Germany, Bobick was matched with former champ Ken Norton at Madison Square Garden. It was more a quantum leap than a step-up fight for Bobick, who was demolished in 58 seconds. Bobick was knocked out three more times before retiring in 1979.

I was keeping an eye on the NY middleweight prospect Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin, who's been flattening everybody, as he was matched against Antwun Echols last week - that fight looked like it might be one of those moment of truth affairs. He came good with a points win in the end.

There have been many British level boxers that got a build up but fell short, but that is more on a British/Euro type of level.

There has not been many that were thought of as genuine world class prospects before failing. As we don't get that many.

Cooney deserves a mention. Never the same after Holmes (shades of Houston, Harry tipped the lumbering Irishman to win).

Over here I always think of our two big middle hopes of the 80's, Jimmy Price and Errol Christie - makes it all the more shocking when they get done inside a round.

Howard Davis in his pink shorts always springs to mind. This guy couldn't fail, they said.

Modern day I suppose Jeff Lacy is a prime example.

You can't really say that Yoan Pablo Hernandez has been exposed. Fine, he lost. But does that mean he was exposed as someone who is not going to get a World title? On that basis you could say that David Haye was exposed against Carl Thompson.

What about Michael Grant?
I seem to remember he was pretty much "the next unified champion" before he got smashed up.

I'd say Wlad Klitchko against Sanders too.
Probably not many people's idea of a "Zero", but he never recovered the "Hero" tag, that's for sure.
