Joe Frazier money problems

Joe Frazier is auctioning off some of his more important memorbilia at Sothebys on April 24th. Some of the items include robes from his biggest fights, expected to fetch thousands and thousands of dollars. Does anyone know if he still lives by modest means? I know he was living in a small one bedroom apartment a few years ago.

Perhaps he doesn't have any room to store them in his small one bedroom apartment?

Surely as one of the most well known fighters of fairly recent times, unless his brains are totally scrambled, he ought to be able to generate some form of income to enable him to upsize from his small one bedroom apartment? Other than selling the family silver, of course.

None of the other former undisputed world heavyweight champs currently live in a small one bedroom apartment do they?

I read that he lost most of it to being too generous with friends and family, and questionable business deals. Pretty sad when you consider Ali, Foreman, and Holmes are all Millionaires.

It was November or December, mate. I forget as I was in Philly twice. I know it was cold, if that helps :-?

He's probably in massive debt just like 3/4 of the rest of the country.

Slightly OT. Didn't Frazier lend Ali money during the ban?

I read his book recently and he doesn't mention that. He talks a lot about how he felt Ali turned on him after coming back from the ban, calling him and Uncle Tom, etc. If he had lent Ali money I reckon he would have mentioned that too. Definitely didn't soften in his dislike of Ali over the years.

Have you read the transcript of their car conversation, which I think was during the ban?

I could be wrong, but I'm certain Frazier loaned him money.

I think you're right. I'm sure I read that.

I think the issue for Frazier was that Ali said all kinds of things about him to sell the fights as he always did. But when Frazier's own people believed them it was too much. I believe it was Tina Turner who refused to meet him backstage at one of her concerts quoting some Ali-ism as her reason.

I think that hurt Joe a lot.

yeah, Joe Frazier felt like Ali had turned his own people against him and said it felt like "swallowing razor blades".

- What I recall is Ali and Joe met at some boxing convention in Ohio.

Joe had driven his Caddy convertible down to end up giving Ali a ride home where they agreed to fight.

Joe with a vested interest in what proved to be the richest fight in history then fronted him 10K cash to pay bills, buy groceries for the family and start a training camp.

Ali had not made much vs Quarry and Bonavena in part after the Quarry fight at a black mogul post fight with dozens of celebs and rich citizens. NY thugs burst in in for a lucrative haul of loose cash, jewelry, watches, furs, ect that probably included Ali cash purse.

Joe no mug always knew Ali more popular, but what really hurt was having to hire bodyguards to take his children to school where kids aped Ali Uncle Tom slurs.

BTW, Uncle Tom was the hero in HBStowe Uncle Toms Cabin, an afront to this great masterpiece.

No matter, by the end it became clear who won the war where Joe stood atop Ali who took years to recover, yet never really the same.

What happen to Ali Jr after he took his multimillion inheritance to seemingly drop off the planet?

I read in Joe Frazier's autobiography, that in 1970 he picked Ali up in his Coup DeVille in Philadelphia
(where Ali was also living at the time)
and they (or Frazier rather)drove all the way up to New York City together and Ali had a tape-recorder going
all the way and the conversations were recorded for his autobiography.
Frazier dropped Ali off at West Fifty-Second street in NYC ,
not to far from Madison Square Garden.

Joe Frazier got divorced in 1985, his wife got the house and he moved into a six thousand square foot loft.
It may have been his apartment in New York City not too far from his office on Broadway that he bought some years earlier.

where was his apartment at that he was living in during 2008?
(I know there was also a sleeping room on the second floor at his gym in Philadelphia )
maybe Joe Frazier developed a gambling problem ( he wouldn't have been the first boxing champion to have ).
He liked playing Blackjack at home maybe he also liked playing it in Las Vegas, as he was there a lot
with his musical revue.

I remember reading in Joe Frazier's 1996 autobiography,
that he said Cloverly had invested "One-Half of a Million Dollars" of Joe Frazier's purse
into a real estate investment in Bucks County Pennsylvania
of 139 acres for a future housing development there.
and that it would pay 'serious dividends until 1999".
