News to me, but apparantly Hennessy had booked Sean Hughes to challenge for the Commonwealth Super Bantam title tonight (Friday 25th April) in Burton, Staffs, but the BBBC wouldn't give persmission for the fight to go ahead?

Apologise if I have any of the details wrong- it sounds like a replacment for the Elcock fight that was due to be on Sky tonight.

Why was the fight not allowed?

Absolute bollocks from the Board.

They said that because Hughes took a shellacking last time out from Pickering he wasn't a viable opponent. They obviously forgot that Hughes had beaten Pickering the time before and did very well for several rounds against the man who was recently number one in Europe in his recent loss.

Further they said the current champ walked through Argie Ward (true) and they didn't want that happening to Hughes.

Well, Argie Ward walked through the little African the Board sanctioned to fight him for the Commonwealth title in a non-TV show in Yarm. I know because I was there. The lad had no real record of note.

Garbage.

its a shame for short fuse as he is having a bit of an indian summer in terms of his durability and increased likelihood of victory, oh how i wish he had more of a dig

Funnily enough the Board thought it was ok to sanction Hughes to challenge Michael Hunter , and Sean had just lost a challenge to Stephen Foster by KO.

Boxing News have it much the same way as I said in the opening in post- it does seem a little unfair. That said, in the long run Hughes might benefit from a warm up fight first.

strange move by the board - would like to hear their reasoning.. I know Ian has given a good description, but it seems at odds with previous decisions

yep fair comment i want a win first but i also want a title shot sharpish. ive got no qurams about the board not sanctioning the fight. but it made the sky show on friday piss poor when they could have filled it with my commonwealth title fight.

What did they show on Friday night? I didn't watch it.

Unlucky Sean, ridiculous decision from the board.

Have to say though I did enjoy the hour long magazine show Sky did instead. Would be great to see a regualr mid week show previewing the weekends action and looking back at the previous weekend.

This will be against the fella that destroyed Ward right?

I was impressed with him, I'm sure Sean will test him more, being more of a Super Bantam and definately a better boxer than Ward (no disrespect intended). Hughes I would imagine would start as an underdog - but is definately worthy of the crack.
