One of Merv's regular quotes was:
"that punch was as useless as throwing cream puffs at the town hall".
One competitor had a huge tattoo of Christ's face on his back and the camera zoomed in on the tattoo. On entering the ring, the fighter crossed himself. Merv exclaimed "neither will do him any good if he can't fight".
Another wheelbarrow quote:
"He's like the boy with the wheelbarrow, he's got the job in front of him".

"That bloke couldn't run out of sight on a dark night." (of a slow fighter)
"He hit him on the deaf and dumb." (A low blow well behind the scoring line.)
"We had a bloke like this in Queensland called Ironbark Jackson. He used to let the other bloke hit him in the face until he broke his hands. Then he would knock him out" (of a particularly game fighter.)

Tall, thick set guy, beating the hell out of a small bloke. Merv - "that bloke is so strong he could stop the Southern Aurora with a cream puff".
Tall, lanky guy, with a long reach - swing his arms around wildly, not connecting with anything - being hammered by a small bloke. Merv (on the tall, lanky guy) - "He couldn't even punch a hole in a balsa plane".

"He's like a boarding house cup of tea, big and weak."
"He's as slow as a centipide with fallen arches."
"He's hit him everywhere but the soles of his feet and the roof of his mouth."
"He's got less chance than a crippled prawn in a flock of seagulls."
"He's swaying like a jelly in the wind."

Of two very overweight heavyweights "These blokes would rather have a feed than a fight."
