Presumably Calzaghe will vacate. Froch was No1 and Inkin No2..... Kessler is No3 in their rankings, so will they order Froch - Kessler for the vacant title?

Calzaghe should delay retirement and give him a boxing lesson. 8)

Will carl still fight the replacement guy??

If there is one Super Middleweight who could give Froch nightmares its Kessler - what a fight - bloody hell I would get excited over that one!!!

Calzaghe has never gone near the best fighters - he won't start now.

Calzaghe's only fought 2 or 3 mandatories. And Mario Veit was 2 of 'em!

Joe has that Ring belt so if he wants to defend at super middle anymore he isn't required to face any mandatories. He'll dump the WBC, WBO and WBA - it's not like he's going to be dictated to by a sanctioning body at this late stage.

Good to see Froch respected by the WBC.

Lots of great fights out there provided he does the business vs Berrio: Kessler, Miranda, Taylor, Pavlik (sure to move up soon), Andre Ward on the way up, Bute, etc etc.

Froch-Kessler is a great fight. The Berrio one ain't bad, either, and, in light of this news, looks a risky one. Froch has never ducked a challenge and has been matched well since day one. Just a shame he seems to have slowed down in the last year or so. At 31, that's the last thing he needs. Still, this is great news and let's hope he'll have a WBC title shot before 2008 is out.

Kessler won't be in shape; he'll be overweight. Shame, because this is right up Kessler's street. The Dane chose not to face Miranda cos there was no title. However this would be an elim for a title, maybe even a fight for a vacant title.

The excuses would come out, 'Kessler only took on a few weeks notice', etc.

But interesting. Interesting.

Kessler would be an awsome fight if he beates Barrio and Kessler he would be in with a good shout of being the No. 1 at the weight, a fight vs Bute would be good aswell!

It would be unsatisfactory if Froch was champion without beating a truly world class fighter to get there (i.e. Inking Kessler or Bute)

I agree, and i think the big fight is what everyone, including Froch, would want. I've already decided my next trip to a fight is to see Froch win the World Title in Nottingham.

It just wouldn't be the same going to see him defend a belt he didn't even win properly.

I think we all agree that Froch needs to win the belt against a true world class fighter like Kessler or Bute. Mundine may work as well, but I don't really see others that would. Miranda would be a great defense, but I would hate Froch to fight e.. Miranda without having met world class first. It just wouldn't seem right.

What about Froch v Taylor for the vacant title later in the year??

If Froch is now mandatory, does he need to fight someone good like Berrio? Or will he just sit on the ranking now with an easy opponent?

Or will it be somehwere in between. I'm thinking how about Cristian Sanavia. Former WBC champ. 1-1 with Marcus Beyer. Lost his EBU title controversially to prospect Karo Murat the other week. Rated highly by the WBC, can't punch but is a decent, persistent, realtively skilled fighter.

I really can't see how Froch beats Kessler. Kessler showed plenty in the Calzaghe fight in the early going, a lot more than Froch has shown to date.

Think Froch is better going in against Calzaghe, than Kessler. I thought Joe's legs looked not all there vs Kessler. If he moves down in weight having fought at 175 I think there will be more signs of him being a jaded old fighter. If Froch gets a weakened Calzaghe, those little slappy shots won't mean anything and Froch may be abe to outgun him.
