Why does Barry McGuigan talk so much shite?

Calzaghe the greatest - McGuigan
Barry McGuigan has backed Joe Calzaghe's credentials as the best boxer Britain has ever produced.
The Welshman extended his unbeaten record to 45 fights by beating Bernard Hopkins in Las Vegas last weekend.
"His record alone tells us that he's probably the best fighter we've ever had," former featherweight world champion McGuigan told BBC Sport.
"Also the amount of world champions he's beaten and the way he's conducted his life, he has to be up there."
McGuigan claimed the IBF featherweight title with a famous victory over Eusebio Pedroza at Loftus Road in 1985 and has a decent claim to the title of Britain's best boxer of the modern era.
But the 'Clones Cyclone' reckons Calzaghe, who has not suffered defeat in 18 years and who has made 21 world title defences at super-middleweight, could hold his own against any boxer from these shores, past and present.
"There'll be those old-timers who say he wasn't as good as Jimmy Wilde or Benny Lynch or Jim Driscoll or Randolph Turpin or Nigel Benn, whatever.
"Boxing's about styles and his style may not appeal to everybody, but he could well be the best boxer this country has produced."
McGuigan was in London in his role of patron for boxing charity Fight for Peace, which recently had its official launch in Woolwich.
Fight for Peace was set up by former amateur boxer Luke Dowdney in Rio de Janeiro a decade ago, and McGuigan believes it can be as relevant and successful in England as it has been in Brazil.
"There's a lot of gun and knife crime in London at the moment and Luke decided he wanted to do something like what he was doing in Brazil," he said.
"It has been a great success so far. The gym is full of kids who have come from difficult backgrounds. We've offered them a chance to get educated and into boxing.
"This is their second family. Ultimately it's about feeling as though they have a purpose in life. There is a lot of tension and crime in London and ill-will towards one another.
"Boxing always has been and remains a sanctuary in these troubled places. It's a moral place, a hard-working place and gives kids a focus."
I can't be bothered to do the research, but can somebody tell me how many genuine world champions and GREAT future hall of famers Calzaghe has actually beaten?
Also, the way he's lived his life?

Right, so they were mostly beaten by guys before Calzone beat them, were old, past their best or grossly overrated.
Has he ever beaten a proven world champion when they were in their prime? The only ones I can see in that list is Kessler, and Lacy at an absolute push who was overrated but in his prime.

Reid - inconsistent, already looked awful against Malinga, controversial decision
Woodhall - already beaten by Beyer, last fight of his career
Kessler - Good champ with some good names on his record
Lacy - unproven, no great names on his record, made to look average by average opposition, won a vacant belt
Mitchell - Never very good, already beaten by Ottke, losses on his record, last fight of his career
Hopkins - 43 years old, inactive, lost twice recently, controversial decision
Brewer - Old, coming off losses to Ottke and Echols

I don't disagree Calzaghe is one of the best ever in Britain but the top of the tree I dunno bout that. I'm not exactly an "old-timer" at 23 but I'd put Jimmy Wilde above Calzaghe! I mean sometimes one definition of champion is facing adversity when the odds are stacked against you - Wilde is a great example of this - he often he gave away 10-20lbs in weight and still won!! He never lost to man his own size or weight.

Loving your work guys; turning another bloody Calzaghe thread back to the topic we know and love... Hatton v Witter.
Bradley's credible enough, as were Collazo, Urango et al. Hardly groundbreaking stuff any of them, but nothing too terrible. Get over it.
Back to Calzaghe, an unbeaten record stretching that far has to be lauded no doubt, and much as I agree with the nuances above of who lost titles and was over the hill etc, they'll still be names on the list when people look back. In twenty years Calzaghe will get more credit from the boxing public than he does now, as they'll forget where the fights were, or how many times oppo had lost prior to facing him.
Anyone else noticed all the yanks keep saying 'the Brits think Joe won' when we're far harder on him on this side of the pond than they are?
