Boxrec Hall of Fame Ballot (May 2008)

Posted: 01 May 2008, 12:47
by Ambling Alp
It's time for another Hall of Fame Election. The deadline for submitting a ballot is Noon CDT on May 15, 2008. I will total the ballots shortly after that.

A brief summary of the rules:
-A voter can vote up to 25 names. (If you vote for more than 25, your entire ballot doesn't count.)
-A fighter's last fight has to be before May 15, 1998 to be eligible.
-You can change your vote. Your last vote before the deadline will be the one counted.
-Candidates who are named on atleast 75% of the ballots are elected.
Go to the Boxrec Hall of Fame Sticky (p.2) for more complete rules.

To vote, just list your selections on this thread. (Don't put them on the Hall of Fame Sticky or any other thread.)
It would be appreciated if you list your selections in alphabetical order.

It's a good idea to check every name that other voters have on their ballot. You may find someone that you overlooked.

So far there had a been a good variety of fighters from different era's, with the exception of the lack of fighters elected from the 1880's and 1890's. Hopefully people will consider the best fighters from that era. There has been decent representation of different weight classes (though only one flyweight has made it), styles, etc. Hopefully that will continue.

Fighters already elected: Muhammad Ali,Lou Ambers,Henry Armstrong,Abe Attell,Carmen Basilio,Wilfred Benitez,Nino Benvenuti,Panama Al Brown,Charlie Burley,Tony Canzoneri,Marcel Cerdan,Ezzard Charles,Kid Chocolate, Billy Conn,Jack Dempsey,George Foreman,Bob Fitzsimmons,Tiger Flowers,Bob Foster,Joe Frazier,Joe Gans,Kid Gavilan,Wilfredo Gomez,Harry Greb,Emile Griffith,Marvin Hagler,James Jeffries,Harold Johnson,Jack Johnson,Eder Jofre,Stanley Ketchel,Jake LaMotta,Sam Langford,Benny Leonard,Ray Leonard,Sonny Liston,Duilio Loi,Yommy Loughran,Joe Louis,Rocky Marciano,Mike McCallum,Jimmy McLarnin,Packey McFarland,Terry McGovern,Carlos Monzon,Archie Moore,Jose Napoles,Reuben Olivares,Carlos Ortiz,Wille Pep,Ray Robinson,Barney Ross,Sandy Saddler,Salvador Sanchez,Michael Spinks,Dick Tiger,Gene Tunney,Barbadoes Joe Walcott,Mickey Walker,Jimmy Wilde,Ike Williams, and Carlos Zarate.

We are going to do a couple of new things this time. There will be another thread that will be called a "Discussion Thread". On it you can express opinions regarding the Boxrec Hall of Fame. It will be a good opportunity for you to champion the cause of partuclar fighters that you feel should make it or shouldn't. That should be a lot fun.
That thread will be for Discussion only. Voting must be on this thread.

Also, we are going to encourage people to name one fighter on their ballot that they consider the most worth and briefly why. You don't have to do this to vote. However, it may help the cause of that fighter.
Lets have fun everyone!

To get things started, here is my ballot:

Sammy Angott
Joe Brown
Jack Britton
Miquel Canto
"Nonpariel" Jack Dempsey
George Dixon
Gene Fullmer
Khaosai Galaxy
Fighting Harada
Beau Jack
Johnny Kilbane
Ted Kid Lewis
Nicolino Locche
Lloyd Marshall
Kid McCoy
Manuel Ortiz
Eusebio Pedroza
Pascual Perez
Aaron Pryor
Luis Rodriguez
Tommy Ryan
Vincente Saldivar
John L. Sullivan
Freddie Welsh
Holman Williams

I am choosing Fighting Harada as the fighter that is the most worthy. I feel that he is the only fighter that one can make a legitimate arguement as being the best of alltime of a major weight class (Bantam) that hasn't made it yet. He was also the flyweight champion as well.

Joe Brown
Miquel Canto
Antonio Cervantes
Less Darcy
Esteban De Jesus
Jack "Nonpariel" Dempsey
George Dixon
Flash Elorde
Gene Fullmer
Joe Gans out (he is already in)
Fighting Harada

Nicolino Locche
Lloyd Marshall
kid McCoy
Azumah Nelson Out
Manuel Ortiz
Eusebio Pedrosa
Aaron Pryor
Sugar Ramos
Luis Rodriguez
Tommy Ryan
Vicente Saldivar
Pancho Villa
Holman Williams

My vote goes for Nicolino Locche. He is arguably one of the top defensive fighters who ever put on gloves. I have seen some film of him and he is without a doubt top 5 in the much underappreciated defense department. He deserves to be in our HOF.

New votes for Pedro Montañez and Pascual Perez

I would pick Pascual Perez. One of the greatest flyweights of all time, if not the greatest. He was a heavy hitting boxer-puncher. He won the championship on the road (Japan), held the title 5 1/2 years and was 54-1-1 when he finally lost the title on a split decision in Thailand when he was almost 34. Oh, and he won a gold medal at the 1948 Olympics

Besides Perez, who would be my top choice, I'd vote for

Joe Brown - longtime lightweight champ who didn't get his shot at the title until he was 30
Miquel Canto--best defensive fighter of the mid to late 70s
Fighting Harada --twice won close decisions over Jofre, held bantam and fly championships
Nicolino Locche -untouchable talent, incredible record
Manuel Ortiz -- Held bantamweight title for nearly 8 years, finally losing it when he was 34
Aaron Pryor --Whirlwind who dethroned one legend (Cervantes) and twice beat another (Arguello)
Vincente Saldivar --A great featherweight who retired at 24, then came back to re-win the title
Antonio Cervantes--Twice jr. ww champ, 15 defenses, beat Locche and Dejesus
KHAOSAI GALAXY - Top jr. bantam in history, big hitter who I'd like to have seen fight in the states
Flash Elorde - Held his own against Sandy Sadler at age 20, went on to win and hold the jr. ltweight crown for six years
Jeff Fenech- During a six-year period ate up everyone in his path from bantamweight to jr. ltw
Daniel Zaragoza - Underrated tough bantamweight and jr. bantamweight champ who beat or fought draws with 10 other champions, often on the road
Humberto Gonzalez - Longtime jrfly champ who won two of three from Carbajal and a one-sided decision over Jung-Koo Chang, Boxrec's number 1 all-time jrfly, in South Korea

Great choices, show you have boxing knowledge, I don't like to make any kind of list, but I would agree on about 90 % of your choices.

Tommy Burns. First Internationally recognized World heavyweight champion. World light heavyweight champion. Record for most consecutive KOs in title defences. First heavyweight champion to manage his own career. First Queensberry world heavyweight champion to defend his title outside the United States. Record for total title defences until reign of Joe Louis more than thirty years later.

I say the most deserving is Tommy Ryan, for being a true innovator in the development of Marquis de Queensbury boxing and holding the middleweight title for 8 years in a very tough era. Many deserving fighters though.

One of the few intelligent posts in this thread, and probably the only way he could be elected given the history challenged nature of most of the posters on this forum.

Angel Rodriguez is a great pick.

Some years before Firpo almost shocked the world against Dempsey, it took less than 3 minutes for "Angelito" to dispatch the Wild Bull of the Pampas.
Add to that that he was giving over 50 pounds in weight advantage (weighing just over the 160 lbs, essentially a Middleweight) ...
