My girlfriend kindly bought me an unfilled punch bag for my birthday. People say to fill it with sand or rags or both.

Rags - where do you get them from? Any speical ones?

Any advice as to what works best please?

Ian Oliver's book that came with Men's Health says sand is the best, if it's any help.

I thought this was another Hatton thread about his 1st 40 opponents.

In my experience sand filled bags can be a bit unforgiving on the hands, especially towards the bottom of the bag which can feel like hitting concrete.

I would be inclined to use rags, maybe mixed in with sand, as you state, to give it a bit of weight.

No special type of rags to recommend, although I would steer clear of filling it with used hospital bandages..

When I was a young teenager I made 1 without soil, it turned to near cement after a while, not a good idea. Would sand have the same effect?

If you use rags, they will have to be very well packed in to give it weight, and you'll have a job finding enough, whatever you do dont put in things with metal buttons/zips, you could bust your knuckles.

I wonder if the bag could seal in water (doubt it)

Whatever it is you don't want something thats too hard on the hands, continually punching something that is too hard will smash your hands up and you wont be able to throw hard shots after that

For boxing i've always heard rags/cloth are the best.... at thai we had bags full of sand,which were great for conditioning your shins, but not so good for hands

So it looks like rags are the best way forward. Cheers for the advice lads. Where will I get sufficient rags from?

Ripped up old clothes stuffed in as tightly as possible wouldwork......maybe charity shops would be the best place to pick up cheap clobber to rip up for rags.

Or id suggest going to a timber merchants and getting some sawdust. Not as dense as sand so easier on the hands, but will still provide some weight and resistance to a bag.

Old clothes! - bed lined etc.


My first punch bag was made up of an old sack filled with cushions etc.

My gym (which is a mix boxing and MMA gym) uses sand for the kick boxing and upper cut bags and a 50/50 mix of sand and rags (packed v densely) for the boxing heavy bag.

Bed sheets are the best - either a charity shop your local Matalalan (or equivalent) would be perfect.

If you use that, always wear wraps (for the heavy bag I use the Everlast glove wraps) and and at least 14 oz gloves you should be fine (assuming of course you can punch properly)

Unfortunately I've just thrown some clothes in the bin you could've had (denim, too. oooh!) but I'll put anything else to the side for you.

Put a circile of high density plastasote on the inside of the bag just to take the edge off if you fill it with sand.

Sand mixed in with sawdust........

or sawdust and ripped up coloth, packed in super tight, as much as you can muster.

Like the guys say, sand on its own would probably be too hard.....

yeh i use rags and even though ure just on the bag ide still were bandages if ure hitting hard your hands start to sting

as long as you arent carrying them out like a sheet of ply...

put off cuts of foam in with the rags this will fill it quicker and be more forgiving on the hands
