This happened in the Japanese event UWFi, a 'stiff' style of pro wrestling which mixed the fake matches with well...supposed stiff style bouts.

Alot of MMA stars were born in this event, as it folded and became Pancrase in the early 1990s.

Other boxers such as Roberto Duran and Art Jimmerson competed in this event.

From what I recall reading in a few sources contemporary Martial Arts magazines and on a MMA forum some time ago is that Berbick was told that the bout was going to be a 'work' something made to look real, but with an obvious end.

It is clear howerver after the first leg kick that he knew he was being betrayed/

Takada has been associated with this type betrayal and fake bouts, even years later in 'MMA' he would try to sell his fake shit for the real stuff.

Berbick is well..as we all know an interesting character. In any case he did not deserve the betrayal. I wish he just unloaded on Takada after that first leg kick.

Thought you guys may want to watch it for those who have not seen it...its an interesting though sad event.

Berbick looked genuinely confused.
He never threw a punch.
Its strange when fighters react like that. Some guys jump out of the ring or quit.
Some guys would say OH so thats the kind of fight its gonna be and go after the guy with everything.
I would have head butted Takada right between the eyes.

Berbick seems confused often...but yeah I agree its funny how some people react.

takada did the same thing in pridefc year later.

Why was Trevor wearing boxing gloves? Seems a bit unfair that he had to wear gloves where he would be unable to grab his opponent, but the other guy didn't.

Takada did this to Bob Backlund and Yoji Anjoh as well.

He blasted Backlund as hard as he could with a kick to the ribs which hurt Bob to the point where he couldn't continue.

Anjoh refused to lose to Takada so they agreed to a draw. Takada started blasting Anjoh with hard leg kicks and when Anjoh put his hands down to catch Takada's leg, Takada changed directions and kicked Anjoh full force in the head, knocking him out.

Its becuse Takada is a dog that only 'won' when the fights were pre determined. Hence his win over Coleman.

Bervbick was wearing gloves because he thought it was a fake match ala Rocky-Hogan...or Thunderlips. Instead he was deceived for the advancement of some Jap fake wrestler and the building of a reputation on a boxer.

I may be mistaken about this ( as far as all the matches being on the same show ) , but if I recall it correctly, all the boxers brought in for that card were duped into beleiving that their matches were going to be works & easy paydays, but were then subjected to taking some stiff beatings under rules that they just weren't prepared for.

James Warring was very vocal about the doublecross afterwards & Duran's people were furious as well, 'cause he got his shoulder torn up in the process of "losing" his match.

That sounds right.

Pretty sad affair really.
