MIKE GOMEZ - Was today named as the next opponent for Amir Khan at a Sportnetwork press conference in Birmingham for the 21st June 2008. As you can all imagine the Mancunian Mexican is up for this one and interviews will be available in coming weeks on both VIP and Michael Gomez websites.

JAMIE MOORE – Will have his first fight back after a shoulder operation on the Ricky Hatton undercard on the 24th May where he will face a Mexican in a 8 round contest.

23rd MAY AT WIGAN – This show will still go on despite loosing the top of the bill with Mike Gomez fighting Amir Khan. Brett Flourney will now headline in an International contest and is well supported by Martin Murray , Jack Arnfield , Chris Johnson , Chris O’Brian , Scott Mitchell ,Stuart McFadgen and Mike Robinson . lets get something straight guys...you wanted khan in with a puncher..and you have now got one, and still there is whinging.

if the gomez that turns up to fight khan is the same one that was so so competetive against johannesen, then khan could just be in for a shock. this fight is definately not going past 5 rounds, but if it goes more than a couple of rounds then khan will taste some hard leather, and if gomez left hook connects then who knows....

yes, khan should win, and win easily, but the puncher/gladiator side of gomez makes this a decent fight for khan.

I think this will tell us more than the Earl fight.

In the context of who he was likely to fight - i.e. a lot of substandard non-punchers - Gomez should at least bring some interest.

I mean, if it goes 5 I am surprised.

Gomez will either be knocked out or knackered by 5.


At least he will try and fight back.

Khan was never going to be involved in a BIG contest considering it's his last contest with Warren and his trainer split, taking that into account I like this contest.

Gomez stands more chance of beating Khan than Kristiansjen did IMO, Gomez can punch and he'll go looking for Khan whilst he's still vertical plus Gomez will be fired up for this one with a full training camp behind him. As Mr Payne said "Gomez has been written off before", it's virtually impossible to predict a Gomez win, but at least Khans facing someone who can punch

The pre-fight pressers and build-up will definately be interesting

The problem is, though, Gomez is a puncher at 130. Khan's a huge lightweight. Still, it should be interesting for 2-3 rounds.

Yes Michael can punch, and its a good match up for Khan to see how he copes with someone who gets in his face in the buildup and press confrences.
Downside is the size difference between the 2 come fight time, Khan is a huge lightweight, also Michaels form could be better.

Will getting rid of his trainer effect Khan? is he listening to the hype to much?

Well I think it'll be good if he can get some rounds with a puncher under the belt, I think it'll be short but hopefully he'll have his chin checked... Certainly not a fight one would expct on the lead up to a world title fight and takes him no closer to a European shot though but at this stage a good fight.

Willie Limond wasn't a puncher at Super-Featherweight either.

There is a 10% chance of a shocking upset I would venture, which is roughly 9% more than any other contest Khan has had.

Earl was a geniune lightweight who could whack a bit.... also lost a thriller to Kastidis... Gomez lost a thriller to Johanneson (bit of a difference in quality there).

So cannot see how this (on paper) will tell us more than the Earl fight would have on paper.

That said, this is still a blow out win for Khan.

I dont blame Gomez for taking the fight one bit, but it represents cynical match making by SN.

Correct - I am just illustrating that when gomez puts his mind to it, he can whip himself into great shape.... and he has always been able to bang.

I was with Mikea few weeks ago at the VIP superstars event - he still looks in decent shape now.

This is by no means a one sided fight IMO.

Should be entertaining whilst it lasts.

Firstly, just to say- shame its not Gaving Rees. That would have been great- especially for Gavin Rees himself, of course.


But then, what did we expect? Gomez, a decent domestic level fighter, although more of a super featherweight. Recently beaten by Carl Johanneson, who in turn was beaten by Kevin Mitchell .

I can see Gomez really, really going for this, and Khan having his work cut out!

So, yeah, looks a decent enough match, all things considered- although one in which Khan really should win- but with a puchers change- you never know!

I look forward to it.

But how are they going to sell this to the general public? Trade on Gomez success over the likes of Baz Carey and Daniel Thorpe- men who Khan easily beat very early in his career.

Yes it's a cynical matchup, with SN hoping the Gomez name brings the hype, but also hoping he's shopworn enough to keel over before landing anything too significant.

But I like this fight, he brings a lot more than the typical non punching type Khan usualy gets. A fired up Gomez, like we saw last time out, could well give Khan a real fight for a few rounds.

That left hook of his is as potent as ever....
