Big Jack Gibson, who coached Eastern Suburbs to two premierships in the 1970s and Parramatta to three premierships in the 1980s, died tonight about two hours before the start of the Australia/New Zealand Rugby league test match. Jack had been sick with Alzheimer's Disease for some time, he was 79 years old.

Apart from his coaching skill Jack was famous for his one liners. One of the best was when someone asked him if his 70kg fullback Paul Taylor had any faults. Jack looked hard at the journo asking the question and said "He is only as big as Clive Churchill was when he played, and he has got an ugly dog."

Farewell Jack. Done good, played strong. :TU:

Jack helped Kevin Humphreys out of a jam once and was by far the most inovative coach of his era. One of his classic one-liners was about Paul Vautin when commentating on a Cane Toad versus Cockroach match:

Vautin has a battleship mouth with a row boat brain.
