In a good old-fashioned unification clash involving WBC and WBA titles, super-flyweights Cristian Mijares and Alexander "El Explosivio" Munoz get together on May 17 in Mexico.
This encounter is a world away from the brute strength and inflated egos of the big boys but pound for pound these two are on a different planet to the heavyweights anyway in terms of sheer talent. WBC champ Mijares is a classy Mexican southpaw unbeaten in his last 24 (23 wins, one draw), a battle-hardened 34-3-2 (14) altogether. He doesn't carry a great whack but doesn't need to on the evidence of his masterful display against Mexcian icon Jorge Arce last year in San Antonio, where he totally outboxed Arce on the way to a unanimous 12-round decision in defence of his title. It was dazzling stuff. He must be the best super-flyweight from Mexico since Gilberto Roman in the 1980s, another pure boxing machine.
Still only 26, Mijares won the title in January last year with a fine 10-round stoppage of Katsushige Kawashima in Japan, a previous decision victim, and has retained four times since, including another masterful display against last time out in February at the MGM Grand against American Jose Navarro; Mijares tripled up on the jab, followed through with southpaw lefts down the pipe and brought the right hook into play effectively too, usually when Navarro least expected it, as he waltzed to the points.
His movement and counterpunching were and are a delight.
To Munoz, and interestingly, the Venezuelan puncher defeated the same Kawashima in his last outing in January, although it was close on the cards over in steamy Japan, where he's fought seven times and is hugely popular. The 29-year-old can whack - 27 of his 32 victims taken out - but failed to budge his last three opponents and could be suffering wear and tear after two spells as WBA champion.
Mijares, in contrast, looks to be right at his peak.
Munoz first won the title back in 2002 with an eight-round stoppage of Celes Kobayashi in Tokyo but after three defences, he met his bogeyman in Mexico's Martin Castillo, who took his title and his unbeaten record on a unanimous decision in Texas in 2004, dropping him twice. Munoz worked his way back to a title rematch but dropped a split decision after 12 bruising rounds in Las Vegas in 2006. Castillo lost the belt a fight later to Japan's unheralded but unbeaten Nobuo Nashiro, and Munoz outscored the new champion last year to finally reclaim the title. He's since made two defences. In 34 fights, Castillo is the only man to better him.
You know, Munoz once reeled off 23 straight knockouts. This really is the matador versus the bull, boxer versus puncher, champion versus champion. Both men have lost but they have never been stopped, two rugged, refined exponents who have paid their dues. Crucially, Mijares enjoys home advantage in Mexico - indeed, he fights in his own backyard. Plus, he looks the fresher man. Above all, his boxing skills should serve as the perfect foil to Munoz's power and aggression and take him to the points.

Man, I can't wait to get SKY. On paper this is a great fight.

That's "Nuts TV". They've been showing some old Nigel Ben fights recently.

Correction: 207 is "Nuts TV". 208 is "Pulse" which, as I write, is showing something called "ChickFight". LOL.
