How he managed to lose 40 pounds is frighteneing, even with his physique at HW. Why he didn't do this 7 years ago is beyond me.

He always was a SuperMiddle/Light Heavy bt fought at heavgy because he was skilled and could avoid the bigger slower guys punches...usually!

It was just about the cash!

Man, he wasn't a fat heavyweight either.

Former heavyweight star Chris Bryd has dropped an incredible 40lbs as he launches a light-heavyweight comeback tonight in a 10-rounder against Brooklyn's Shaun George.
It is full circle for the 37-year-old Byrd, who picked up Olympic middleweight silver back in 1992, and also lost to Joe Calzaghe in the amateurs, and turned pro at light-heavy in 1993. He stayed there for only two fights and was soon weighing in at well over 200lbs and making serious waves amid the big boys, the dinosaurs. This is a man who took on Ike Ibeabuchi, Bert Cooper, the Klitschkos, David Tua, Andrew Golota and Evander Holyfield - many of whom he licked - on the way to IBF and WBO heavyweight titles. He was never a big heavy at 6ft but made his speed, agility and southpaw boxing skills work for him.
Ultimately, Byrd was stopped in 11 rounds in an eliminator for his old IBF title by unbeaten Russian Alexander Povetkin last year, after having lost the belt to "Wlad" Klitschko, and the upshot is not the cruiserweight division which recently saw its weight limit increased to 200lbs but the old dreadnought division, bizarrely. You know, Byrd is preceded by two men and two men only who moved down to light-heavy after holding the heavyweight title (or a version of it): Roy Jones and Bob Fitzsimmons. It essentially finished off Jones.
Byrd certainly does thinks differently. His mum and dad work his corner and, despite his gaunt-looking appearance in recent photos, the man from Flint in Michigan should beat George tonight in Las Vegas, who lost to Alexander Gurov four fights ago.

Looks freakish the way he's dropped weight there.

Byrd seems so nice it's bordering on the insane here - he's skipped cruiser apparently, to avoid his good friend Steve Cunningham....

If he didn't look fast at heavyweight in the past 3 or so fights he won't look fast at light heavyweight.

Think Byrd should have moved down after the 1st loss to Wlad. He could have been something at a lower weight but now it's too late.

I really hope he recaptures something here.

As Bennie says, he's trying hard to do the virtually unprecedented.

I think if Byrd has some form, then match-ups with the likes of Joe Calzaghe et al are very interesting, purists fights as Byrd has never been a ticket seller but interesting all the same.

He looks awful. This is too late for my liking. Chris should have stopped over at cruiser and possibly 75 years ago. At 37 years of age its the wrong time for his body to be dropping 40lbs. Thats just insane after his spent his entire career at heavy.

Just a thought, but Byrd was being booed in his hometown at/near cruiserweight vs Arthur Williams after taking an unpopular "hometown" decision.

Maybe I'm being a bit nasty, but what slippery Chris ever that great?

at heavweight i never noticed how long his arms were.

Williams fight was very close, but Byrd was on the way up and so was Williams. Williams no mug of course.. I hear what you are saying though. Styles make fights and maybe Byrds style was more effective against the big lumps...

I think we are all in agreement that we would like to see Chris do well, he really is a likeable dude with serious heart and balls.

PS I thought we agreed a few weeks ago that the loss to Calzaghe didnt happen? Bennie, can you give us more details? cheers

I don't remember that. I remember posting evidence for both sides of the argument. From what I've read, I think Calzaghe did beat Byrd in the amateurs.

I am sure Byrd would have had plenty of lighter weight sparring beforehand but he seemed troubled by the amount of punches George was throwing. I suppose when you are up against a 20/30 punches a round workrate (Heavyweights) it can come as quite a shock.

George looked alright in there, though I think whatever Byrd had left was beaten out of him by Wlad and Povetkin.

1) He lost 40 pounds through diet and exercise, hardly frightening...

2) Ummm being IBF heavyweight world champ brings in a hell of a lot more cash than light heavy contender, 2 mill a fight Vs 50 grand....
