Many thought this was a bad decision at the time, anyone here remeber the fight and care to comment?

Lockridge was a hot champion coming in, Gomez was on the way down and moving up to a weight where he didn't seem to have much power. Lockridge outworked him for most of the fight but Gomez pressured him in the championship rounds. I remember being surprised Gomez was still around by the 11, 12th and 13th rounds and amazed he was giving it to a very strong jr. lightweight in Lockridge. If the fight hadn't been in Puerto Rico Lockridge would likely have gotten the decision by two or three rounds, but I didn't see it as an outright robbery because of the way Gomez fought late in the fight

Thanks giacomino
Lockridge was a very good fighter who seems to have been forgotten. He was around in a strong division and fought many top fighters. Maybe he wasn't quite a great fighter but you had to have something special in order to beat him.
Anyone else see the fight?

I've seen it and have it.... great fight!... I've never agreed with it being seen as a robbery like many said at the time... close fight and Gomez outworked a fading Rocky in the late rounds... one of the reasons people thought Gomez was the loser could be due to the terrible swelling he got round his face in this fight, he certainly took a lot in this fight and it basically finsihed him... but imo he deserved to win... he wanted it more in the late rounds and that clintched it for him....
LOckridge was in a number of wars/classic fights... his bouts with pedrosa, Tony Lopez, Barry Micheal for instance... he was probably just a notch below being an all time great but fought some great champions and always gave them a tough fight...
...if you'd like the full bout or some of Lockridges other fights drop me a pm

The decision was rigged. Just before the fight- Gregorio Benitez was quoted in the NY Daily News saying that Rocky had to stop him before 7 to win. He said if the fight lasted past 7- it was a definite Gomez win. Sure enough in round 7, Rocky staggers Gomez and backs off the rest of the fight.

I'm Puerto Rican and was HIGHLY biased towards Gomez and I STILL thought Lockridge was robbed thoroughly. Rocky of course rebounded rather nicely against Mayweather.

Lockridge beat Mayweather a year before fighting Gomez. He went on to lose a title fight to Julio Cesar Chavez, then beat the hell out of Barry Michael to win the IBF jr. light strap

you're correct, and my bad.
Lockridge did have a rather nice career for a non-HOF fighter. As somebody stated, it seems like only the true cream of the crop could get by him.

What's Lockridge doing nowadays?

This is a mighty valid question. I see so many former fighters around. Rocky isn't one of them and I don't have a clue personally. I hope somebody sheds light on this.

I also saw the fight Ezzard...It was a great fight, but in no way the great Wilfredo Gomez won that fight. No way. Wilfredo was waaaay past his prime, and was breathing heavily. In one of the rounds, one of his cornermen loosed Wilfredo's shoes so that he could buy time in his breathing.
Rocky Lockridge was a very tough customer that gave great fights to great champions like Eusebio Pedroza, Julio Cesar Chavez and Tony Lopez, but always came SHORT.
I read also that the fight with Chavez in Europe was controversial in the scorecards and that Rocky won the fight. I should see that fight to see if Rocky really won.

Gomez was very well past it by the time he met Lockridge and yes the ifght was close but not a robbery like some make it out to be I thought Gomez barley pulled out the win in the last couple of rds.
As for the Chavez/Lockridge fight Chavez won the fight fair and square.

I have this fight. As kidbazooka said it wasn't the huge robbery it was made out to be.Lockridge said he thought Gomez probably won or something like that.It was close but Gomez came on late.
One of the reasons people think it was a big robbery was Ferdie Pacheco was calling the fight and apparently thought Lockridge won every round.Pacheco also thought Pernell "Sweat Pea" Whitaker's nickname was Pee Wee and continuously called him so in one of his fights despite Czyz correcting him so his boxing knowledge may be called into question.

"Chavez is comin' at him. Chavez will eat Pee Wee up if Pee Wee doesn't show him somethin'..."
Another little Pacheco gem, whilst commentating on a Ricardo Lopez bout...
"Coming into the arena tonight, people thought I was Larry Merchant. It may've been the low-point of my life."
