I'm curious about a fight that took place on August 4th, 1926 between heavyweights Jack Renault and Cowboy Owens in Montreal. Does anyone have access to a report of this bout? I'm interested in reading it.

Thanks.

Cap

I checked the available Canadian newspapers in newspaperarchive.com for August 1926, and came up with nothing.

Sorry.

Thanks, Ray. Does this raise the unpleasant possibility of a bogus record?

Not necessarily - probably just that newspaperarchives.com may not have any Canadian newspapers from that specific date. I didn't check USA papers, which may have carried some kind of wire service report.

The Star was a fine old New York newspaper.

Guys -- I reached out to a jack Renault specialist in Canada, who wrote me the following:

Hello Mike,

I can confirm to you that Jack Renault did not fight in Montreal on August the 4th 1926. He fought rarely in Montreal and I went through all that period in the local newspapers. Each of his presence was heavily publicized and such a fight would unquestionnably have been mentioned. As a matter of fact, Jack injured his hand in his bout against Jack DeMave (may 7th 1926) and was out of fighting for more than a year after that.
I'm 100% solid that the fight the Oneanta Star refereed to never took place in Montreal or anywhere else. But if you find out it did, please let me know.
Take care, [name omitted]

The mystery deepens -- we really need to get ahold of the Montreal paper to see if Goethe/Owens did fight something

Sounds like a good idea, Mike. I've read a ringside report that scored the Renault-Sharkey fight at Boston for Renault. That paper loss was a turning point in Renault's campaign for a shot at the title.
