What kind of boxer are we looking for....???

just read a thread about why Brits do not like certain kinds of boxer.

We hated Eubank
We do not rate Calzaghe
We moan about Khan

we hate boxers but love them when they are seriously injured or lose, or go nuts and do crazy things.

What are we looking for in the UK. Are we looking for a heavyweight version of Nigel Benn, or a tougher Frank Bruno, or maybe another Bruce Woodcock?

For me I am looking for a guy who comes through the ranks with no glitz or mouth, a guy who comes in the ring to a basic anthem does the buisness and its greatful for the fight. Maybe a British version of Evander Holyfield.

We need another Lennox Lewis, confident and classy, yet was capable of flinging insults and deriding opponents.

What type of boxer is Britain looking for? Well considering he drew 50 odd thousand for a fight with a mid level fighter last weekend, Ricky Hatton

Just ignore the whinging old womens act you get from these clowns on this forum, its completely unrepresentative of the real thoughts of boxing fans

Someone with genuine talent, a bit of charisma, and the desire to fight the best opponents available.

So basically David Haye minus his big head! D

Oh and I never hated Eubank. He and Benn were great for British boxing!

Yes a capable Canadian is just what british boxing needs...

But seriously, Haye is a good start....and Eubank and Hamed were hated and loved in equal amounts. But they generated interest.

Personally, I'd like to see a new Nigel Benn.

Lennox was born in England last time I looked.

My girlfriend was born in USA but has British citizenship, does that make her British?

Does it shite!!!

Well that's the question - what does constitute nationality or rather national loyalty?

Lewis won a gold draped in the Canadian flag - yet you say he's british??

I was born in Spain but am about as Spanish as chicken tikka masala... I would suggest it's a lot to do with personal belonging and feeling, and frankly Lewis has himself said he's not specifically british.

Yes, thats exactly what we need.. Another fighter who fights a load of old shot lighter fighters and denies us arguably the biggest fight in British boxing history while maintaing he is one of the lads.

What we need are fighters like David Haye who REALLY want to fight the best and just want to prove themselves.

God man, what do you have against Hatton? He just took on arguably the best fighter ever in his own backyard and moved up a weight to fight him as well. He's done more than any other British fighter at this moment in time, expect Calzaghe in the last three years.

How about a Ricky Hatton who actually takes on all comers, doesnt have a cynical career, has a word called defense in his vocabulary, has a ton more power, doesnt hug his opponent to death and doesnt constantly put on a veiled cheeky chappy act

I dont think most of us on the forums hate/dislike fighters we are just critical and call them on their low points. Hatton/Khan/Calazage are top draw but they arent perfect and we shouldnt have to adore them

Americans dont love all their boxers, why are Brits expected too?

And no one's perfect, so let's hate the entire world if you want that philosophy. I am not saying that we should love and adore but cast him some respect, instead of pathetic and unnecessary criticism for not being perfect - he's one of our best achievers in the sport.

Explain this to me, please.

If you walk around at a heavier weight than someone, if you outweight them on the night and are actually in shape, If you weigh more than someone when you are at lt welter and step in the ring at 11st 2 and they weigh in at 10st 7ls & lbs and fight at 10st 10lbs - are you bigger or smaller? Please explain

And How does that mean you are 'really' moving up a weight?

Also, Hatton does not fight all the top fighters.

Cotto
Corley
Urkal
Witter
PBF

All dodged at Lt Welter.

Haye will fight the top boys if he gets the chance, thats the kind of fighter we need.

The thread asks what kind of fighter we want. Its my opinion that Hatton is not the kind of fighter that I want.

He has had 1 prime top class fighter and he hardly landed a punch.

So go on, tell me which other British light welterweight has a record like his or better than his? Junior Witter? Colin Lynes? Gavin Rees? David Barnes? I just don't see why you have to hate someone so much when he's a numerous world title holder and a two weight world champion. And no one has perfect records and apart from Haye, everyone has avoided someone, even the great Mayweather.

Cotto, most people believe Cotto wanted no part of Hatton at 140
Corleym ummm what? decent fighter, but you cant fight every top 10'er in your division
Urkal, yes Hatton dodged Otkay fornicating Urkal.....
Witter, again you cant fight everyone who is a top 10'er in your division
PBF was "dodged" at 140? umm ok

man, thats a pathetic attempt....

ssshhhhhh this hate campaign is actually Witter's people trying to stoke up interest in the fight. Yes thats the level of Witters savvy

While Hatton is on Parkinson dong his schtick, Witter's people spam messageboards

And you wonder why he cant sell tickets.......

hilarious

I d not HATE, there is no room in DG for hate, but I refuse to buy into this Hatton nonsense.

Answer my question about the weight.

Winning World Titles against future Hall of famers in Collazo - Urango and Mausso was just HAtton facing th EASIEST route to the belt.

And as for KG saying Cotto avoided Hatton, that is soooooo funny!

What kind of fighter do we want? not another Hatton, that is all I am saying.

Another Nigel Benn? - that would also be acceptable!

And a comparison between Haye and Hatton is stupid because Haye's an incredible boxer and Hatton's an amazing fighter - that's a massive difference. Hatton has made the most out of his ability - he took on Kostya at the perfect time and was still a 5/1 underdog. He took on a 'over-his-prime' fighter in Castillo and was quoted at 4/6 to win. And all those other decent fighters like Maussa, Collazo and Urango all brought word-titles to the table. So, Lazcano is the only one in the past three/four years who didn't bring nothing to the table and that was classed as an "confidence boaster" fight, so that's understandable.

He's made the best out of his ability and is still going after ten years with only one defeat to the best fighter in the world. I'm just glad he's not ended up like Corrales, Corley, Castillo, Benn, Eubank and so forth. At least we still have a meaningful fight in Malignaggi.

Boxer/Fighter.

I think he means, what kind of ambitions to you want to see etc etc and fighter/boxer is one and the same in this respect.

Bottom line, I do not want to see another fighter who ducks people and fights over the hill fighters.

Accept it. fighter or boxer. I do not want to see another fighter with the MO of a Hatton.

He ducks people? Fair enough, I believe he should've fought Junior but who in this day of age fights the best available all the time? And don't say Haye, because of yet, he's not done it, and many people, myself included, believe that Cunningham is way better than Enzo. But Haye did what's best for himself in terms of publicity, exactly what Hatton did in fighting names, past it or not.

Hatton has NEVER fought the best available, apart from a naturally smaller fighter in PBF for $20M!

Others ducking fighters is not the point.

Look at Cotto for example.

Last few fights, Quintanta - SSM -Judah ONE GIMME in Gomez and next up.....MARGARITO!

Real fighter fighting real fights!

I don't know why you keep making comparisons with other fighters, first Haye and now Cotto. Can you provide proof that Hatton turned down any other top class light welterweight - it's a poor division so he tried to step up and didn't do well at welterweight (and he outweighed Collazo by only 2lbs), so he stepped back down. Light welterweight is a bad division and I don't think Hatton's turned any top class fighter down, including Cotto. You really class Corley (who's been shit since 2002) and Urkal (you can't be serious) as world-class? And then you have the audacity to say Hatton avoided Mayweather at 140lbs (common logic suggests that is crap considering that he eventually fought him at 147lbs) and Cotto (can you please provide proof that Hatton avoided him).

You do hate Hatton (and you use poor reasons for your justification of it) and if you say otherwise you are a liar - he's done more than a lot of other British fighters giving a bit of advantage away in terms of weight (Collazo and Mayweather) and home advantage (Collazo, Mayweather). And his other fights have been for world-titles apart from Castillo who I think is a belting name to have on his resume. Oh, and he also unified the division (something of which Cotto, Mayweather, Corley, Urkel and Junior never did).

Well to be fair you are glossing over a legitimate criticsim of Hatton with that answer, yeh Corly you can't fight everyone at a weight, however if you don't fight someone at British European and World level it starts to smack of not wanting to fight them... Fair enough if he doesn't fancy the fight for what ever reason but that gives boxing fans a reason to criticise him for conducting his carrer in that manner.

Do you follow the sport?

So, Hatton ducked Witter - his mandatory shot at Corleys WBO title, Shot at Urkals European - Cotto....and then PBF several times!

Everyone knows that HATTON AVOIDED PBF FOR YEARS! Hatton himself admitted he was not ready and turned down many offers

You think Hatton went up at Welter because there was nothng at LWW?

He was FORCED to fight Collazo by HBO because Lazcano was injured.

We have to compare fighters, that is how you get the mythical P4P list etc etc.

Sorry to burst ya bubble!

You're wrong. I know for a fact that Hatton wanted Mayweather at 140lbs after he beat Kostya and he said as much in his book - I dare you to find me a link that says he "wasn't ready" for Mayweather then. And you talk about Urkal and Corley as if they are Gods. I wouldn't be surprised to see Hatton turn down Urkal in the slightest because he was shit and he lost all his big fights (who also never held a world-title), and like I say, Corley has been crap for a good few years now.

You try to demean Hatton by saying he fought past-it fighters. But you could theoretically find fault with anyone's resume if you tried hard enough. For example I like Cotto a lot but I will show you how easy it is to break up someone like you do. He beat Quintana who is horrendously one-dimensional, he beat Malignaggi only just, despite being nearly 12lbs heavier than Paulie (and still struggled a bit), he then beat a waaaaay past it Judah who hadn't fought for a year (an was hurt big), then he beat another past his prime fighter in Mosley (and nearly got beat) who was 36 and then he fought a reality show star in Gomez.

You can rip up anyone's CV if you really wanted to, but you seem to focus on Hatton's only and it's pathetic because he is a nice, down-to-earth and talented young man. I agree he could've theoretically fought better opponents but you can say that about anyone or any fighter. I suggest to you is if you hate him or dislike his career then ignore him like I do with Junior. However everytime I read a post on here you're banging on about the same crap and use no PROOF whatsoever in your post.

Now, find me where Hatton said he wasn't ready for Mayweather, Mr. Hatton Hater.
