Liverpool-based Serbian Geard Ajetovic ventures all the way Down Under to take on unbeaten middleweight Daniel Geale in a daunting 12-rounder in Sydney on June 27.
Ajetovic, a talented, stiff-hitting, solidly built 27-year-old who struggles to get a fight here, has lost only once in 18 starts (one draw) to good Frenchman and current EU champion Christophe Canclaux in Monte Carlo in 2006 (points). Since then Ajetovic fought to that draw with Patrick Maxwell, clattered the useful Sheffield man in a quick rematch in three rounds, became the first to stop Ugandan hard man Joey Vegas (four rounds), took a 10-round decision over French dangerman Robert Roselia in France and basically elevated himself to honorary membership of the "Who needs him?" club. To compound things, Ajetovic is a former star amateur who boxed in the Sydney Olympics in 2000.
It explains this long return trip and a fine-looking opponent in the 18-0 (12) Geale, who trounced previously unbeaten fellow Aussie Daniel Dawson over 12 rounds last time out in December and has gone the full 12 rounds in three of his last four fights. Clearly, Geale is being stepped up to championship level after a distinguished amateur career himself. He boxed in the same Sydney Olympics as his opponent and picked up welterweight gold at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in 2002, licking Londoner Tony Cesay en route. Victory over Ajetovic could secure him a crack at soon-to-be middleweight Anthony Mundine.
On home turf the 27-year-old Geale must be the pick.
