Can Pacquiao beat Hatton?

BUMPED FROM ARCHIVES, THOUGHT IT WOULD MAKE INTERESTING READING NOW THEY ARE SET TO FIGHT!

A few years back i would never really have entertained the thought, but now?

A lot depends on his showing against Diaz, which i think he will come through, and if he does, its very very like'ly he will fight Hatton in early 2009. So, assuming they get it on, how do you see this one panning out?

Hatton, it has been agreed by almost everyone on here, is on the decline, and i would now personally give the Pac-Man a good chance of pulling of the upset. He will be giving away a big big natural weight advantage, but i think his power could still have a big effect at 140lbs. His lethal straight left hook would cause Hatton no end of problems IMO and i think this could be his ultimate key to victory should he pull it off.

I'd still take Hatton to win, i'd say i'm sitting around 60/40 in favour right now.

How do others see this one going?

Depends on Pacman's reach, but I think it's about the same as Ricky's (which I believe is 66 inches). My main concern is that Manny was leaping in like a Gazelle at times against Marquez, and, if he did the same against Ricky, he'd got stopped.

According to Boxrec Hatton is 65" and Pacman is 67". Both the same height.

I think Hatton's punch resistance has gone, so I give Pacman a chance of scoring the upset.

How about Hatton Vs Ivan Calderon?

Or maybe Baby Jake Matlala.

Pac is a Supereather at best. One time Superfly has no business at 140lbs.

Hatton would be far to strong, it would be a good fight for him big name, big money and low risk
It's not likely to happen tho??

Those are the things that Hatton likes in an opponent.

It is laughable - O thought he came back tp prove he is the best at 140lbs.

So. Lazcano a career Lightweight and inactive coming off a loss.

Maliganaggi - no punch and looked bad last few fights.

Pacman - One time superfly.

Hatton is heading for the Hall of Fame!

I dunno mate, this si the fight I heard was in the plans and suely Pacman winning a title at lgihtweight and then a fight at light welter would make for a 5th weight division. If he were to (somehow) beat hatton I'd say he beat better opposition in winning a title at 5 weghts than Floyd did, he already has a comparable (could argue better) resume.

If Pacman gets rid if Diaz in a convincing way then I will reevalute this potential fight.

If Pacquiao beats David Diaz and moves straight up to light welter i'll be very disappointed. He has fought excellent opposition throughout his career but lightweight is shit hot at the minute.

I'd rather see him fight Guzman, Juan Diaz, Casamayor, Campbell, Katsides, Khan, Marquez etc at lightweight then move up and fight Hatton in a fairly dead division.

If Hatton lost to pac, it would probably cement his position as one of the least talented high-profile British fighters ever.

I didn't expect i'd ever be saying this either but i'd give Pacman a good chance.
It seems that he may have naturally grown into the lightweight division. If he can deal with Diaz's natural physical strength i think they'll go for it then drop back down to LW for the remainder of his career.

Pacquiao does not really seem physically diminished hardly at all unlike Hatton and he'd certainly hit Hatton harder than Lazcano and faster. If he can manage to flit out of the way of the hugmonster and land faster straight lefts and keep on his toes all night he could do it.

Easy fight for Ricky, too big.

Not sure about Pac's chances against Diaz who Is a boiled down light welter himself.

Hope Ricky fights him just so Pac loses and the Pac fans hide In shame In hyping him so much.

Why would we hide in shame? Pac has faced some of the best fighters in the world in multiple weight divisions throughout his career and come out on top more often than not. Sure he's had luck along the way just like many other world class fighters have. Personally I think the Diaz fight will be tough for him and there's no guarantee that he's going to win. The difference between Pac and many other modern fighters is Manny isn't bothered about reputations, he just wants to fight the best available fighters and even if he loses he goes down fighting. Fighters like him should be applauded and remembered for years to come.

What makes me laugh is how Hattons people are talking up a potential bout against Manny who is yet to prove himself as a top lightweight. It just shows Hatton wants the "big name" on his record and the millions that go with it, not forgetting the size advantage Hatton will have over Manny as well.

I thought he lost widely to Marquez twice and don't know why the decision In the 2nd fight was thought of as close, I thought Manny looked limited, just fast In that fight.

Find It strange he's got so far, technical wise he's limited.

His Filipino and young American fans are the worst. In the Philippines he seems to be used In politics to make the leaders look good and then theres fans who can't accept others thoughts without them going Into flame fest.

Max, your views can be so blinkered sometimes, I had Marquez winning the first fight and I think the second fight could have gone either way (I actually had it a draw) because it WAS a close fight.

Like I said though Manny fights the best fighters whenever he can to test himself rather than sit on some bullshit title. There's no top level fighters out there more exciting than Manny and THAT is why he's so popular, because he goes out there with his heart on his sleeve and gives his all no matter how good the opponent in front of him is which is what we as boxing fans want. Boxing would be a far better sport if more fighters show the same courage and determination as Manny.

What did I tell you guys about calling me blinkered after the Hatton hype before Floyd beat him. Do you guys like being hypocrites?

Thought Marquez handily out counter punched him In the 2nd except for the KD. First he won every round after the 1st, theres a case Manny won two more after the 1st though. Marquez did even better the 2nd time around though and was horribly robbed.

Fighting the best Is great but when you lose, you shouldn't get a gift decision.

Whats blinkered about what I said about Pacquiao anyway? You come out with something without explaining why.

Morales gave him hell and pac mullered him (well did twice)

Hype? World champ at 3 weights (so far), lost once in ten years, beat barrera twice (KO'd him too only person to do so), beat morrales 2 out of 3 times (KO'd him twice - only person to do so), fought marquez twice (w1 d1 - rightly or wrongly), hammered Larios. Nobody has him above mayweather p4p, but nobody has him outside top 3 or 4 - overhyped? no chance (imo)

Who in your opinion then, should he be fighting at 140 to "prove" himself?

The 140lb division is poor at the moment. A fight with Malignaggi is the best bet for Hatton. Otherwise it's Witter or Pac-Man. Incidentally, I think Pacman would beat him. Far more skilled and talented than Ricky. Size is no issue.

Third fight with Morales was pointless though, Erik was pretty much shot by then. Thought Morales beat Diaz thought 115-113. I know fights are close but the judges should see it right with their experience surely. Too many close fights get scored for the wrong guy.

Some of those guys were fought at the right time though too. He's hardly cleaned out a weight class either or fought many of the 10 tops except two or 3.

He's got more big wins than Mayweather though so why Is Floyd put above? Floyd only has the 5 weight title thing.

OK i'll tell you why you are blinkered, you accuse Pac fans of over-hyping him yet you and others do the same with Calzaghe who is a fantastic fighter by the way but he's nowhere near as good as you say he is.

By the way who are you accusing of over-hyping Hatton? Because I certainly never hyped him up.
