Can anyone tell me about Brook and Jones

I'm just curious what kind of fighters they are and if either stand a chance beyond the UK boxing scene.

Brook is a muscled, unbeaten banger who seemingly nobody wants to fight; Jones, a southpaw like Brook's original opponent Kevin McIntyre, who was outscored by Tony Doherty last time out in a 10-rounder, after 15 straight wins.
Brook has plenty of potential, although he's yet to go more than six rounds and this could be seen as his first test in the paid ranks; Jones is tall for the weight and mixes his shots up nicely to head and body.

Brook has some lovely skills but what we now have (spoiler.......................................) is a champion who has still yet to face a stern test.

I think the board want some real questions asked of them for this farce. Barry Jones looked like a novice in there tonight at times....partly because he is (only 15 fights or so). Generally speaking a fighter would have (unless exceptionally gifted) perhaps another 10 fights there before getting into championship contention.

I had hoped for a little bit more from Jones as the fight wore on as he is a 3 time 4 nation amateur champ accprding to the commentators, so there is obviously some calibre there. And credit must therefore go to Kell, who one must say, with 15 or so pro fights only, is still a relative novice, and if that seems unfair then consider that (according to Steve Bunce) both fighters had each only faced TWO (2) men with winning records. So a very poor excuse for a British title contest in my opinion. I'm sure the short notice cannot have exactly helped Barrie Jones, who must've boxed out of his skin to ledger a win over Tony Doherty.

Final I would just say that Kell Brook comes across in interview as a lovely chap and that made me pleased for his achievement....I would like to see a champion have a bit more experience against high quality opposition than this, as once you get the belt there is no hiding place. I think Kell has some exceptional skills but I fear this win has come too early in his career for him and I do not expect him to very long hold on to the Brit title. Many a boxer will be far less easily intimidated into a shell that at 23 or so, IMO Barrie Jones was, who was not only up against Kell but also the occasion, and before anyone points out Kell is 22 I know this.

I suppose you gotta take your chance when it comes knocking and it just goes to prove this game is as much to do with timing as anything else. I'd have been interested to see how Kell would've fared against someone who would have been unafraid to stand in the centre of the ring and give him a clip on the chin as there are a good few lads out there who would have undoubtedly done that, not least my pal Francis who boxed for this self-same title in September against Kevin Anderson, but as mentioned above, that's for the BBBoC to be embarrassed about.

Brook looks very good. Quality boxing skills, and straight, sharp punches. If he's moved right he can go far. He did take a handful of big straight lefts, but he was facing a tall southpaw.

I haven't been following this whole McIntyre/British title episode. Did the BBBofC bend over backward to save a Sports Network show/main event?

Nevertheless, it must have been frustrating for Brook having the McIntyre fight put off twice due to the champ's injury. To his credit, Brook said that now he's the champion, "They've all got to come and get me." He seems eager to get into the good fights, in other words. And there are loads of them. McIntyre, Anderson, Muttley, Watson, Doherty...if he can prove to be a level above these guys, then he will be a very bright hope.

I don't agree with Brook that "There's only me and Ryan Rhodes in Sheffield," following the defeats of Woods and Witter. John Fewkes also looks promising.

In his last fight, for the Welsh Title, Jones actually lost to Doherty. He has never actually beaten Doherty, in fact all his wins are against very limited opposition. http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?hu ... &cat=boxer Thats why it struck me as a little odd that he was in this one. I know that he was a late replacement, but never the less it does seem odd to get a British Title shot after losing in a bout for a Welsh title.

I'm not trying to disrespect Jones, but it seems unusual that the board was happy to sanction this.

"To keep the British title moving." Disgraceful.

Considering that McIntyre beat Anderson twice as well, you'd think the BBBofC would give him a bit of a break.

Couldn't Frank have come up with a WBF, WBU Intl, WBO Intercontineltal, WBO Junior, titles for Brook? Or if the Board are going to get silly, how about making Mac "British Emeritus" or "Super British" champion, and letting Brook fight for the "British regular" belt?

If the Board are going to behave like this to keep titles moving, then they might as well start "splitting" their belts.

But I have to say, I enjoyed watching Brook for the 1st time ever & he's the only reason I have any interest in the British welters - a division that hasn't done much for me of recent.

How was the Setanta commentary on the Brook fight?

I watched it with the sound off - have been doing so since Rees-Kotelnik and all those Enzo Cal & macca episodes - as I don't like to be pissed off.

Bunce compared the 2 lads before the fight, their records and the fact that they haven't fought anyone much good. Was this all Nuncey was allowed to say in case it undrmined the fight? To his credit, Bunce did not spin it as a classic British title fight.

But I turned the sound off during the actual match. Did the commentators explain the situation, that McIntyre had been scandallously stripped? That this was really like seeing an English champ vs a Celtic champ (that kind of level)?

So much of boxing is equivocation. Ambiguity in order to mislead. Obviously, Brook dominating a British title fight makes ppl think that he's by far the best in Britain, and probably can go on to world level eventually.

Brook's average.
Gets caught too much. Someone like Michael Jennings would wear him down.

Agree with Autobarn regarding the commentary.... how Brook deserved this title shot is beyond me, simply for waiting. Yes, okay people have pulled out but I am still perplexed at how he was in an elimination situation in the first place.

Nice to say Bunce not hype it up as a classic British title fight, but for him to say either was worthy was a bit much.... neither were worthy 1) McIntyre should NEVER have been stripped 2) What has Brook done to be in an eliminator in the first place 3) Jones is coming off a defeat, although to be fair he wasn't the first choice replacement.... and as replacements go he's not terrible.

I didn't really understand Bunce's final part where he claimed that Jones has sort of known for more than 10 days that this could happen and he could have the shot. Ummm Doherty just said that he was offered the crack within these 10 days since McIntyre was stripped.

I know its sound a bit suss, and I aint at all happy that McIntyre has been shafted. Was this the scheduled date for Brook vs McIntyre. Its just was off the schedules very quickly on here and BBN so cannot remember. All I saw was Small vs TBA for the Central Area title as the many even about 3 weeks ago.

So did Rawling and Richie not enlighten the viewers as to the convoluted way in which Brook got his title chance? Did they try to allow viewers to believe that this was a British title fight without any controversy leading up?

I'm not sure where Kell would rank in the British ratings, but last night will have made it look like he's #1 in the country. If so, should the presenters and commentators not be a bit more...forthcoming and dare I say it...honest?

I still think Brook looks good. I'd actually rather see him at the centre of all the good British welterweight fights, as anyone else, as corrupt as that sounds. If he sorts that defence out he can go on to good things.

From the ring walk to the post-fight interview, I don't recall any mention of McIntyre or any controversy at all.

Sky would have spilled the beans right away. You can just imagined Darkie illustrating what happened before following up, "What is that all about?"

Sorry about that one folks I must've got my wires crossed with Setanta there a bit.....like I say on that viewing , and no disrespect to Barrie Jones, he'd have needed to turn in some performance to beat Doherty. I haven't actually seen much of Doherty at all but I'm surprised he has yet to get his crack given he's had plenty of fights and had some real amateur pedigree in the Commonwealths if I'm not mistaken.

On the commentary I did forget to mention last night that it was a joke for prolonged periods. I thought the praise every 2 seconds for Barrie's heart and chin (mainly chin) was at times just a big smokescreen for the fact that they didn't actually have a British title standard contest!! Woodhall and Rawling were about as bad as each other but one of them put himself streets ahead on the bullshit-o-metre when he said that Brook had been rocked "down to the soles of his boots"....which translated to English meant that Jones had managed to hit Brook's face with any menace for the first time in about 3 rounds. Further inspection revealed that in fact Jones had connected with a shot but Brook didn't even break stride. Talking bollox in other words.
And I don't remember much if any mention of Mcintyre or if they did it was given the merest glossing over.

I SAID HE'D WIN BY KO and I was RIGHT. :D I thought it was a good fight. Kell did great and Im really pleased for him. Its about time he had some luck after the fights thats fell through. As for those who are saying 'whats kell done to deserve to fight for the belt?' Yes he hasnt had many decent fights but thats NOT his fault if anyone decent wont fight him is it? and its not through lack of trying i.e doherty, mcdonnell, mcintyre and young who I think he would beat anyway. So nows the time for those mouthy boxers saying 'I'll beat brook' to let they're fists do the talking and step into the ring.

Dont spoil his win by going on about 'what should have been', 'ifs' and 'buts' Let him have his glory.

CONGRATULATIONS KELL :TU: :TU: :D :D :D

I'd give the edge towards McIntyre, although i'll be cheering for Kell.

Does anyone know if McIntyre is the first defence for Kell?

What happened when Docherty got in the ring? All they said was that something was said by the Brook corner after the fight towards the Jones corner and then he jumped in and got agitated.
