Re the father and son question: In 1936, Jersey Joe Walcott knocked out Phil Johnson in three rounds in Philadelphia. In 1950, Jersey Joe knocked out Harold Johnson in three rounds in Philadelphia.
Yes, Phil and Harold Johnson were father and son.

Bennie, that would have been a great trivia question. Just the opposite of Overhand's question.

Yes, it is the opposite, but I thought it was worth a mention. Another good trivia question is: name the first black fighter to win a world title?

rats....I posted the Walcott/Johnson info on the heavyweight families thread. Fooey. All my life people have followed me around and copied what I said and then said it themselves and made millions.W.C.Fields and George Carlin stole their entire acts from me.

I saw the Walcott/Johnson fight on tv..Harold wasn't ready for fighter of thjat experience and quality.

First Black fighter to win a world title: George Dixon beat Nunc Wallace of England by knockut in 18 rounds, june 27,1890, for bantamweight titlle. I saw that one on live TV too, so don't come on here and say you knew it first. Called him on the phone and congratulated him.

if his name doesn't ring a bell, he was better known by his nickname,
Kid Chocolate, which was given to him by me.

I didn't copy what you said. I knew it anyway. Another popular trivia question concerns Jersey Joe's real name...Arnold Cream of course.
No takers as yet on the first black man to win a world boxing title!

Oh, sorry. You got it. Yes, George Dixon.

As regards the heavyweight boxer who tried to make the Olympics in the discus...Britain's Joe Bugner for the Hungarian national team.

Tony Madigan.
Am I STILL copying you, Jaclem?

Let's get this straight.
Bugner was a junior ENGLISH schools champion at discus as a 14 year old in 1964.
He attempted to qualify for the 1996 Australian Olympic team at discus.

Let's not get het up about boring old Joe Bugner. He always hated boxing. Truly despised boxing. He should have stuck to the discus.
On this same theme, can anyone name the English fighter - a world champion in the Eighties - who was once London schoolboy chess champion?

bennie...hah...your namesake,Jack Benny STOLE EVERYTHING HE EVER DID FROM ME!!!! oh, the nurses and the orderlies here don't believe me either, but I've quit trying to convince them, because I HATE sitting by myself in that place they call the "quiet room."

one more thing, bennie...don't think I don't know that you are in cahoots with Tomato Can and taking all my best posts and putting your name on them.

Well, my lawyer is Clarence Darrow.....need I say more?

Anyone got any answers on the London schoolboy chess champion who went on to win a world boxing title in the Eighties?

I never knew Alan Minter played chess. I stole that line from Jaclem :(

Besides Clarence Darrow was a cruiserweight.

Who was the only heavyweight to have fought both Dempsey & Louis?

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh. No, but nice try. It wasn't Braddock.

Eh......Sharkey I suppose

Jack Sharkey. You can stretch it a bit if you include King Levinsky whom Demspey fought in an exhibition match. I'm tossing him in because it's been written by some that even though it was just an exhibition, it was competitive and convinced Dempsey not to make a comeback.

A question: How did Sharkey compare the two men?

By the way, that London schoolboy chess champion was Terry Marsh. He is one of only a tiny handful of world champions who retired without ever losing a fight.
Name those select few?
