THE ill-fated British middleweight title clash between Birmingham’s Wayne Elcock and Darren McDermott, from the Black Country, took yet another dramatic twist late last night.
Friday’s venue for the biggest fight ever in the region between two Midlanders was switched from Coventry SkyDome to Wolverhampton Civic Hall.
The mouth-watering clash between champion Elcock and challenger McDermott started off at the Villa Events Centre scheduled for April.
That was postponed when Elcock suffered a serious chest virus, halting his training.
Arrangements where then made for the clash to take place in May. But that, said the Elcock camp, was insufficient time to get fully fighting fit.
Agreement was then reached for the match to take place on June 20 at the Villa Events Centre, but it was then discovered the refurbished centre didn’t have an entertainment licence.
So the match was then switched by promoter Mick Hennessy to the Coventry SkyDome for the same date.
That was where Elcock won the title, dethroning veteran champion Howard Eastman with an outstanding victory... but at a high financial cost.
Ticket sales have been desperately poor – 600 for a 3,000-seater venue – and another switch was forced on Hennessy.
The fight is to be beamed live by Sky TV and a lack of atmosphere was not what they wanted.
But during earlier negotiations rival promoter Paul Rowson, who also has a show on June 20, offered to put the Elcock-McDermott fight on the top of his bill.
That offer was turned down, with thanks, but now there has been a change of heart and Sky are happy to go to Wolverhampton Civic Hall.
Paddy Lynch, coach and trainer to Elcock, said: “The whole thing has been an administrative nightmare, but at the end of it all I don’t care where the fight takes place.
“It is a boxing ring and the fact that it is now in McDermott’s backyard makes no difference. Elcock will win no matter where the fight takes place. He has sparred more than 200 rounds and is in great shape.
“For McDermott to win this one he has to be one hell of a fighter – and he certainly isn’t that.”

Nightmare for Hennessey, can he keep taking these poorly attended shows.
If it was a Warren show , we would all be ripping the piss.

Shame, it's a cracking fight between McDermott and Elcock. How can Khan sell 10,000 yet this only sell 600?

I would think it would be Lloydy’s fight and probably Haughian's. I don’t know, mind. As always, depends on which ones are television-friendly.
