Roy Jones beats Calzaghe

Let it be known here when I said this.

Roy Jones only struggles against big punchers. With Calzaghe this will be another Felix Trinidad showcase as it is Calzaghe moving up in weight. RJJ will be more than comfortable with Calzaghes punches.

It would hardly be a huge surprise if RJJ did beat Calzaghe. Many boxrec members have already predicted that. RJJ is far more active and faster than Hopkins. Furthermore Calzaghe arguably doesn't have the power to knock him out. Therefore it should be a close call.

Cheers for that, Moses :TU:

Jones only struggles against big punchers??!!!! Eh? Johnson and Tarver are not murderous punchers. Decent power but they caught him on the slide, he's enjoyed something of a revival against negative opposition and an overweight welterweight. Watching Tito that night was soul destroying.

He'll lose to Calzaghe because of workrate. 10 years ago he's have beaten JC convincingly.

So if it is felt that RJJ has a decent chance of winning, surely then JC cannot be criticised for taking soft touches

Agreed to some extent Coco. My issue is that two years ago he said Roy was finished, now suddenly he's a worthy opponent.

Pavlik or Dawson (although I think he lost to Johnson) are the only other credible opponents. Tarver lost to Hopkins so I see no point. Joe isn't a two-weight world champion yet.

My genuine feeling on JC wanting the RJJ fight is purely that he wants the money.

Can't realing blame Joe for that. Another UK fighter has earn far more than him and he's gonna want a slice of the pie. There's no other marquee names for PPV, except maybe Pavlik, but RJJ is a brand.

Roy Jones could take it easy v Trinidad because he didn't have the stamina that Roy had - I reckon Joe will simply outwork him, like Hopkins.

That is exactly my point it is a business and a job, it's waht pays the rent and puts food on the table
It seems this is often forgotten when fighters are critisised for chasing the money.
This is I I felt I needed to reiterate the point

RJJ can hit JC as hard as any right hand from Hopkins.

JC doesn't bring the heavy one-punch firepower of Tarver, and hes not a clubbing hitter like Johnson,

JCs legendary work rate wasnt so evident early on v Hopkins when he was wary of the counter. Would love RJJ to throw a spanner in the 'Calzaghe Legacy' nonsense.

RJJ is passed it.

Calzaghe fighting Hopkins at 43 happened for a reason, Calzaghe could no way beat Hopkins a few years earlier.

RJJ is not 43, but has not aged as well as Hopkins, i give RJJ no chance.

Who knows, maybe in a few years time we could see Calzaghe v Tarver

Yer but i dont think Calzaghe has any problems "paying the rent" or "putting food on the table"
Why should the fans give a toss about the business side of the game, we just want to see big fights.
I fight with Pavlek lookes as big an earner as a fight with a washed up Roy Jones to me.

If Joe didnt honestly believe he could beat RJJ he wouldnt fight him. Joe is all about winning. OK, I agree the money is vitally important and big money fights are all he will take from now on but I am certain retiring undefeated is his biggest ambition. A prime RJJ would have definately stopped Joe but I think Joe will win this by a narrow margin. Jones is still good and will give Joe a tough arguement if the two meet.

RJJ has nowhere near as good a defence, nor is he as sneaky as Hopkins.

His whole career he relied on reflexes and speed to bamboozle opponents, and cannot fight well when he is defending himself.

Joe wins a UD or maybe even a late stoppage.

In there primes RJJ by KO or UD, now Joe by rather easy UD.

jones has gotta stop taking rests on the ropes.

cos calzaghe will just flurry and outwork him.

he's gotta keep things in the centre of the ring to stand a chance for me.

Roy Jones is just too passed it. Old, but a Hopkins he ain't.

This is only 50% as matches as Pavlik-Calzaghe should be

I give Jones a much better chance than I did pre watching Calzaghe vs Hopkins... but I just think Roy is to authodox and to little a work rate for Joe.

I do think the old version of Roy still has more speed than Hopkins, but now less power (hanging against the ropes = less leverage) and aint as good on his feet as old Bernard and not as strong.

But it was Hopkins' speed that surprised Joe, his speed and his tactical brain... I don't think Jones has the tactical brain of Hopkins.

Jones still fights with low defense and now that he is slower than he was Calzaghe should have no problem landing on him with head shots. Joe should win on points, I dont see him risking a broken hand trying to KO Jones, not unless he was trailing on points and could only win by KO. Jones can still land big so Joe needs to avoid the possible big bombs early on.
