British heavyweight champion Danny Williams defends against English champion "Big Bad" John McDermott at the Goresbrook Leisure Centre in Dagenham on July 18.
Veteran Williams won the title (for the second time) with a nine-round stoppage of previously unbeaten Welshman Scott Gammer last year in Neath - a man McDermott outboxed and outpointed a few months later - then ventured to Switzerland and busted up big-hitting Ukrainian prospect Oleg Platov last December. Although it was ruled a no-decision, the 35-year-old Brixton Bomber was winning and winning in style when cuts saved Platov in the fourth round. Last time out in May Williams ventured to Spain and survived three early knockdowns at the hands of previously unbeaten Konstantin Airich to outlast the dangerous but raw Kazakhstani in the seventh of an incredible affair.
Clearly the champion has shrugged off bad back-to-back defeats in 2006 to Audley Harrison (three rounds) and Matt Skelton (when he came in as if he were auditioning for BodyShock and was easily outboxed over 12 rounds by a renowned brawler). It should not be forgotten, Danny holds a four-round knockout of one "Iron" Mike Tyson in the States in 2004 and challenged for the WBC heavyweight title against Ukrainian giant Vitali Klitschko in Las Vegas later that year, losing bravely in eight one-sided rounds.

McDermott is no Tyson (well, they resemble each other these days) but has certainly improved from his last attempt to win the British title in London in December 2005 when he was blasted in the first round by big Skelton. The blubbery yet talented Essex man looked overawed in his corner before the bell, crossing himself more times than Frank Bruno, and went down four times. He will want to make amends in this one and already has to some extent, having reeled off six wins, including that solid decision over the burly Gammer in a 10-rounder last September in Sheffield and a second-round blasting of the dangerous yet perenially frail Pele Reid to lift the vacant English belt in April at York Hall.
The 27-year-old son of former wildly exciting heavyweight pro Stan McDermott boxes very well and carries a bit of a dig, although not in his dad's league and Danny is by far the bigger puncher of the three. Both champion and challenger, obviously, have Duranesque weight issues.
McDermott possesses enough boxing ability to make life initially difficult for the slow-on-his-feet Williams, who has struggled in the past with clever types such as Michael Sprott and Harrison, and surely has to 'go' some time. Not this time, however. The champion's greater experience, strength and power will surely tell from the middle rounds, and he forces a late stoppage.

after watching there last fights you have to fancy Mcdermott his defence is so much better and he has the confidance now????
i think williams is losing his punch resistance and it would only be time before he walks on to a straight right and gets ko'd

Nope. Danny has McDermott's number and both guys know it. KO1 or 2 the latest.

Well your wrong with the statement that McDermott wouldn't even spar with Williams because they have sparred loads of times so I dont know where you got that info from . I wouldn't write McDermott off, on paper he has nothing to lose and Williams is very unpredictable

Have you got a massive hatred towards McDermott by the way you have to be so abusive about it? And slow? I dont think so, not sure many would agree with you there that he is slow, he has quick hands for a 'fat' heavyweight, and you have to have some kind of boxing brain to became an ABA champion, well I thought he showed good hand speed and decent boxing brain in his last fight againts Pele Reid, one Im sure you either predicted he'd lose or wanted him to because of your obvious dislike towards him

Your right Marc, won the ABA's in about 10 Amatuer fight..
For a fat fella his Hand speed is very Fast, He was'nt given a chance against Gammer and some people questioned him against Reid.. I wouldnt be shocked if he causes an upset and i hope it does ...
