Anyone know has his promotional status changed... find it odd that he his return following a defeat is headlining a bill in Liverpool, the same night of Mr Warrens' big Birmingham card.

I asked the same thing a couple of weeks back. Doesn't seem likely Frank would loan him out for one fight particularly when he has a card of his own on the same night.

Despite losing to Choi he's not exactly ready for the scrapheap. Maybe Frank just thought that after that loss there wouldn't be much gain in carrying him towards a WBO shot. Maybe the contract came to an end and Derry wanted out. Who knows? I don't, but I'd like to :)

He's probably still with Frank.

Jennings fought on another card last year and Is still a SN fighter.

The bills in Liverpool, so Derry will shift quite a few tickets, gives him a chance to build up again.
Wally Dixon has said it will be a international opponent, probably eastern europeon.

Hope he defends against hooks better this time. Man he took alot of Choi.

Just find it bizarre - although yes, I can see he would sell more tickets in Liverpool - but when his promoter has a bill lined up that night, surely his 8 rounder could feature on the undercard. Although would Warren be getting a cut of the ticket sales in Liverpool?

I spoke with Dixon and he is still with Warren, but didn't elaborate why Warren was letting him being used. I could understand if it was the Echo Arena but the Olympia ain't particularly big and I'm sure they would have done decent sales without Matthews. When I spoke to him last week they were still searching for an opponent, I don't know who gets final choice on opponent, but it sounded like Dixon did.

Just thought I would clear things up.

1. Derry is still and has always been part of the Sports Network stable and will box at MEN on September 6th

2. Derry is headlining the Liverpool show in order to get a fight in before the end of the season. Derry has a very good following in Liverpool and will still shift plenty of tickets. He has the blessing of allegedly / Sports Network to appear on this show. This has happened before with Mick Jennings headlining at Preston Guild Hall.

3. His opponent (we think) will be Kenyan Featherweight Champion John Gicharu (visa pending) 8 x 3 mins rds

4. There is only 1 "T" in Mathews.

Should be a good show 11 other fights on the bill £40 ringside , £30 stalls

It is a good show of local talent , if it is John Gicharu then he's untested, but unbeaten, doesn't mean he's good or bad. have to see.
Probably surprised a few that Derry is staying at feather, most said it was the weightmaking that contributed to his lose to choi.

lsg do you know why Warren is prepared to let him fight on another bill, despite the fact that he has one set up for that night?
I know he has a decent following so why wouldn't Warren want to use that, unless he has received a very good offer, but with Dixon's money problems this last month (detailed in this weeks Boxing News) that would come as a surprise.

It comes down to space on bills.

Derry is an 8-12 round fighter and when Sports Network put their bills together they will usually have space for 2/3 10-12 rounds fights , 1 or 2 8 rounders and the rest will be the new blood doing 4 x 3 mins.

Derry's next available slot on an SN show will be on 6th Sept. Rather than wait for that he can top the bill in his hometown , hopefully get a win and get the ball rolling again. You must remember that in boxing opportunity can present itself at the drop of a hat but normally not after a bad loss. It's strange but true, getting a win ( any win ) suddenly makes you ready and available should something pop up so we would rather get it in before the end of the season and therefore be available for any opportunity that should arise.

Like I said before , Derry's still a draw in Liverpool and as such he's getting a decent purse for this appearance. Not what he would get on a SN show certainly, but like I said he doesn't have a slot until Sept 6th.

Frank has given his blessing to Derry boxing at Liverpool but if he wanted to use him on 19th July he would have had priority. Frank is Derry's promoter and this is just a situation that suits all parties.

Is Dixon involved at all? The Liverpool Olympia site says Dixon is promoting so those invloved might want to get it changed if it ain't true.

Carl Greaves is promoting the show. Wally cannot officially promote a show until after the Central Area Council meeting on 20th July. Wally was originally promoting it which is why it appears as such on the Olympia website. Events at Wigan (see boxing news) mean that Carl Greaves has had to take over as Promoter.
