Members of a Brooklyn gang considered killing boxing champ Mike Tyson but were persuaded not to do so because he was a Muslim, a government witness testified yesterday.
Tyson was on the hit list of the Cash Money Brothers gang because he had allegedly offered to put up $50,000 to avenge the murder of his bodyguard at the hands of gang members, said witness Shelby Henderson.
During testimony yesterday in the racketeering trial of Abubakr Raheem, 38, a reputed member of CMB, Henderson said that he was in a car on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn near a men's shelter when other members of the gang thought they saw Tyson's sport utility vehicle.
But Henderson said that when the idea of killing Tyson came up he told his fellow gang members not to think about it because "Tyson is a Muslim," according to a transcription of his testimony.
Tyson was never harmed and it is unclear if he even knew of the alleged plot.
A week ago, another government witness testified that the former boxing champ had put up $50,000 for the killing of CMB members who are believed to have killed his bodyguard Darryl "Homicide" Baum in June 2000. The witness stated that nothing ever came of the alleged contract.
The Brooklyn federal court trial of Raheem, who is accused of racketeering murders, is expected to go to closing arguments this week.
