Trinidad v DLH 2

Yes, I will be very interested the day DLH, Hopkins, Winky, Barrera and Mosley do pack it in for good - what going to happen then.Glyn Leach wrote:It would be an absolutely typical GBP match, all about name value at the expense of real boxing. IMO they are raping the sport with their celebrity circuit and I've yet to see what they are giving back.
which fights do you mean stu?stujones wrote:Yes, I will be very interested the day DLH, Hopkins, Winky, Barrera and Mosley do pack it in for good - what going to happen then.Glyn Leach wrote:It would be an absolutely typical GBP match, all about name value at the expense of real boxing. But I aint complaining about the two big fights of 2007..... might have had name value, but they were massive 50:50 (ish) fights. Fights like that were just what the sport wanted.
Difference is though - DLH is the biggest star in world boxing and formed GBP promotions well before his final fight - and his mates happen to be the other biggest stars in the sport.DIRT SUGAR wrote:GBP probably the reason Calzaghe hasn't re-signed with allegedly allegedly. Probably looked at how DLH and BHOP raking it in and thought 'if these boys can do it no reason why I can't!'
Interesting times for boxing over next couple of years with boxers taking things out of promoters/managers' hands.
Penny for Mr Warren's thoughts on things at the moment.
My point exactly about GBP - they jump on other people's shows and claim them as their own. For instance, Schaefer claiming in this month's BM that GBP would be staging events like Hatton-Lazcano all over the world - GBP had nothing to do with that event being the success it was, nor can they claim much involvement in Hatton-Mayweather, which happened at Floyd's instigation and was sold by Floyd. Even De La Hoya-Mayweather was sold more by Floyd, who came up with the 24/7 idea. Realise, GBP are just a front for HBO. They can attach themselves to any event or successful fighter by virtue of HBO's funding, indirect or otherwise, of GBP. Everyone wants to be on HBO, by far the biggest payers in boxing, but to do so these days you need to be attached to GBP. And what fighters have they ever created? All they do is make celebrity fights between veteran names from different weight divisions and go around taking other promoter's fighters, and jumping other promoters' trains. They are a dangerous parasite. The will suck the sport dry and show no signs of leaving it with anything positive. Where are the GBP fighters coming through? If they showed any sign or intention of creating something for the future of boxing I would change my opinion, but they don't - they are all about money and me me me. Everything that's wrong with boxing and the world, as one respected writer said to me recently.chesh wrote:GBP also promoted or co-promoted (with Top Rank) MAB-JMM, MAB-Pac ll and Mosley-Cotto in 2007.

Totally agree with comments here. GBP are great at promoting name fighters but pony at establishing stars. From what I've heard they've ruined Juarez to build up older fighters like Barrera and Marquez. Don't even get me started on the Santa Cruz debackle!!
Plus HBO have suddenly started touting the RING belt as a legitimate world title. Coincidence?!
You think that's a good thing though? At least with the alphabets they don't allow one Promoter to have a monopoly on the belt like GBP have done recently with the 135 title.Coco wrote:De La hoya in effect bought a sanctioning body in buying the Ring magazineEmerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote:Agree Barn. I take your point, Glyn. Quite disturbing really. Just don't let GBP buy out BM.... unless they make you an offer you can't refuse!Glyn Leach wrote:My point exactly about GBP - they jump on other people's shows and claim them as their own. It's clearly a bad thing, I imagine those ratings will be constantly manipulated, GBP fighters will start appearing at #1 and #2 in the ratings, despite having never fought at the weight, with the vacant belt on the line!Emerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote:You think that's a good thing though?
