Cruiserweights: Roy Jones Jnr V Rocky Marciano

i think it would be an awesome fight. i know many wont give jones a chance but i could see him being very competetive and his speed defence and power would give Rocky fits, however if Rocky lands early Roy could go into his shell and loose a loopsided decision or be knocked out.
Thoughts?

Im going out on a limb here but over 12 i cant see Jones losing. Over 15 i think Marciano might have caught up and KOd him.

Maricano a tad too strong and relentless eventually wears Jones down for a late tko or manages to batter his way past Jones on the scorecards late for a decision. I do imagine The Rock being quite the bloody mess at the end of this one.

I don't know if anyone on here raves about prime RJJ the way I do. I consider him an ATG and rank him as the best Super Middleweight ever. Even at LHW I have him in the top 5.

However, Marciano would have destroyed RJJ. Prime RJJ was almost impossible to hit, but Rocky Marciano would have crowded him and roughed him up. Rocky would have been able to absorb RJJ's punches and break him down then take him out. I don't see any other way for this one to go except Rocky by KO.

I'd like to clear up a couple of misconceptions:
  • Rocky Marciano was a heavyweight and Roy Jones was a middleweight: If Roy Jones had fought in Marciano's era, he would have debuted at 175 and moved up to heavyweight in 1996 or 1997. If they fought prime-vs-prime, Roy Jones would be taller and weigh more.
  • Rocky Marciano was an unstoppable killing machine: Marciano could be outboxed. Look at the first LaStarza fight, the first Walcott fight, the first Charles fight.

I like this match up. I shall sit and ponder this one.

I am inclined to leaning towards RJJ in a competitive
decision victory.

Rocky Marciano would have stopped Roy Jones inside of two-three rounds. Why? If the limited, not as strong John Ruiz could have sent Jones flying across the ring in the 1st round, I dont see Jones being able to survive the onslaught of a man who averaged 80-85 punches, where it was not uncommon for him to surpass 100, a round and was an ATG puncher who was arguably the greatest conditioned heavyweight champion of all time, least of the last 60 years.

Jones might have back peddaled enough to survive early on, but virtually every opponent of Marciano's done this, and wasn't able to survive.

the only thing for me to comsider for marciano winning is that marciano would hit jones everywhere and i think that could slowly break jones down but if jones is moving well it will be hard for marciano to get to him

So, you're saying that because Jones traded with John Ruiz in the first round, he'd trade with Rocky Marciano?!?!??! Are you trying to suggest that Roy Jones is stupid or something?

roland lastarza was close on the cards when he was ko'ed in the eleventh but roy wouldn't last three rounds? they are basically the same size. marciano was 5'10", 185 and jones is 5'11" and would be around 180-185 by the time he would re-hydrate after a weigh-in at light heavy. marciano was as tough as they come and could punch like hell, but jones would be light years ahead in talent and skills. jones' speed would be way too much. rocky would only have a puncher's chance. jones would have been a big favorite in the casinos if this fight would have took place.

Well, LaStarza had 30-something bouts against heavyweights without being stopped, including one against Marciano himself. Roy Jones has had ONE bout against a heavyweight, and against one not known for his knockout power.

Roy jones started out in the pro ranks at 160 lbs., then grew into 175, then one fight at heavyweight, even then he was only 185 lbs.
He probably does not have the strength to last against Marciano.
Yes, he is fast, and the only way he could last would be to run, because if he at anytime stands and tries to score againt Rocky he's going to get hit and eventually he is going to wear down.
And if he runs too much, the decision will go Marciano's way.

Jones was knocked out by Antonio Tarver and Glen Johnson, so he probably wouldn't stand up to Marciano's punches.
Marciano by late round knockout.

i definitely agree with you..... rocky is the greatest heavyweight boxer in the history of boxing. he can even knocked the klitschko brothers; ali; lennox lewis;joe mesi;samuel peter and ruslan chagaev out. but i doubt if he can knock nickolai valuev out.

Though I do believe people suffer from nostalgia and tend to rank the undersized Marciano a bit high, I believe this is a fight he definitely would win.

Jones can out move alot of fighters and potshot people but I believe Marciano would just keep coming and eventually knock out Jones.

exactly. marciano would be a light heavy today. how could he beat someone like lennox or holyfield in their primes? jones would be a horrible matchup for rocky.

Rocky could not have got any smaller. He was about as trim as he could be. I guess with different weigh in times and new drying out schedules he could make 175... Then again does he get to sue the same substances Roy did to miraculously put on weight?
