Today we look at Great Sportsman, Former Heavyweight Champ Floyd Patterson.


I'd like to hear any stories one might have about Floyd Patterson. Thank you!

I live in Charlotte, NC and met Floyd Patterson here at a boxing dinner. He was born not too far from here, however I am originally from Brooklyn and we spoke about his days boxing at the old Parkway Arena in Brooklyn., he seemed to be a very warm person, not affected at all. He is a real gentlemen and a credit to boxing

I've met Patterson a few times. He's always ben gracious towards fans and other fighters. A Class act.

I talk often with a friend who knows Patterson well..from back in the amateur days right up to the present. He says Flloyd has good and bad days, and yes, he was removed from the commission because of failing memory....which may or may not be Alzheimer's. Sadly, there are times when he doesn't recall winning the title back from Johannsen, and is unclear on other events from his career.

Like everyone else, my friend thinks he is one of the most decent and unassuming men that boxing has ever known.

From time to time I call to get an update, and will enter the next one I get, though frankly I pursue this information with little enthusiasm.

I very nearly did, when he visited a town called belleek, and visited the carlton hotel [an establishment familiar to me throughout my life] in the late eighties. I know that floyd actually wanted to live in ireland.
