Interesting that Gainer was offered the fight with Khan for the September bill, Gainer carried quite a punch in his prime and probably still has the power (even at 135?) to hurt Khan. He is also a former World Champion and brings good experience to the table... I see he beat Navarro in his last fight which is not a bad result, didn't see the fight so not sure of the fairness of the decision.
However on the negative side, as is the trend with Khan opponents (at the moment) it is a man who has spent the majority of his career 1-2 weightclasses below Khan - who is a big lightweight. He would also have been inactive for over a year by the time the fight came around....
What are your thoughts people?

Gainer would have been a horrible choice, i mean geez it wasnt long ago he was a featherweight and has a very boring style! A good guy would be someone like Edner Cherry, well known in America through espn, dangerous but also very beatable
Dream fight in september would be Khan vs Emmanual Augustus

I think you are right Exittored and Augustus would be a quality opponent and one that the majority of the forum would be happy with. However I would say that the majority of Khan's fans are casual sports fans who only tune in to see the Khans, Calzaghes, Hattons etc. Therefore I expect that his promoter would not relish the thought of selling an opponent with 29 losses to those fans/the general public.
At this stage, I feel Khan needs to be in there with an Augustus type and I am prepared to be pleasantly surprised if it happens in September.

Emanuel augustus would destroy Khan, Khan wouldnt hurt him and would be taken into the later rounds, and i think would be stopped with body shots.

I know what you mean but i'm afraid its allegedly who is wrecking the lads career by matching him with feather fisted boxers, if it was up to Khan i'm sure he'd fight anyone so we gota keep that in mind
If they couldn't get Augustus than Edner Cherry would be a good choice, not quite world championship material but a good yardstick against other guys like Malignaggi and Jose Santa Cruz

Wrecking his career or saving his career?
Khan needs to improve before getting thrown in with bangers.
FW matching is ideal to bring someone like Khan into genuine world class

Short term maybe he's protecting him from a loss but what's the point long term when he comes across world class punchers in the future

Whilst I completely disagree with anyone who states it is Warren who is ruining Khans career, I also have to disagree with you about the validity of anyone bringing Khan into being genuine world class, I just don't think Khan will get there.

I really despise Gainer after the fight with Marquez where he did everything not to fight and looked for an excuse to get out of the ring, he cheated his opponent, the fans and the networks that night so for a chance to see Khan beat up on him, I'm in!

Well exactly, but you've been round here long enough to know that unless a British prospect is thrown in with Azumah Nelson circa 1985 by their 5th fight them some dreary malcontent will come on here having a moan about the way they are being handled.

yeah 'Smoke' was a real disgrace that night wasnt he?
He wouldnt have had the same profile, or number of televised fights, without his long standing friendship with Roy Jones.
Khan would runi him at this stage in his career. Glad he turned it down though otherwise it could have turned into a sprinting contest!

FFS why is everything that we see as negative about Khan's career blamed on Wazza ?
Look I have my issues with Wazza, but it is a total cop out to lay any blame at his doorstep.
If Khan is frustrated by Wazza's handling, and standard of opponents, why has he just put pen to paper and tied himself contactually to him when he could have had his choice of Promotors ?
I'll tell you why. Because Wazza is doing the right thing so that his frailties are not exposed at this stage in his career and deep down Khan knows he's right.
Can those frailties and faults be ironed out ?
I don't know, but what I do know is that posters are recommending opponents that are extremely dangerous to Khan right now.
So, what do you want ?
To see him bombed out right now, or given a chance to develop ? He's still a pup.
Whilst I would never compare Rhodes to Khan, I can speak from personal experience.
Rhodes was thrown in against Grant having just reached 21 days earlier. We all know the outcome, and I still say with a little more nurturing and taking the foot off the accelerator, then things might have been different.
Bsck off Wazza, and if you're not happy - switch off !
There's plenty of other talent out there to follow.

Yep, he is a DISGRACED featherweight. He never fought on a big network again, after that shambles.
His last decent performance was losing to Chris John in Indonesia. He basically laid on the ropes all night, dropped John in the 1st, landed the odd counter here and there, and got a working over for 11 rounds on the ropes.
Has the man ever actually actively tried to win a fight? He tries to pull off the RJJ style of not getting hit, and often he ends up not landing any shots himself.
Well exactly, but you've been round here long enough to know that unless a British prospect is thrown in with Azumah Nelson circa 1985 by their 5th fight them some dreary malcontent will come on here having a moan about the way they are being handled
Khaosai, that is so feeble. Khan is a world rated lightweight. Sure they have top take a step back after Michael Gomez. But what use is digigng up featherweights and super feathers? There are gaps in the kid's learning curve. He made so many errors vs a shot Gomez, so don't piss your pants when ppl complain about the progress of Khan.

Khan's career is starting to be handled like Julio cesar Chavaez Jr's!

more like derrick "puff of smoke" gainer.
not a bad choice tbh.
he's a lefty and a decent counter puncher.
when he decides to throw.
i can kind of understand how he was negative against someone like marquez.
marquez is one hell of a mean counter puncher.

This sort of choice opponent does nothing to inspire the anti-Warren brigade.
Get Emmanual Augustus in there next and the pressure will start to decrease.

Problem is Butch, there is a good chance that Augustus would stand Khan on his head at this stage in his career - much as he did to Thaxton, many moons ago...

TT,
Exactly the point I was making earlier.
Augustus is one dangerous opponent.

Plus the "greatest journeyman in Boxing" now has a WBO title.
I'd go, just to see the Drunken Master.

Khan would take Augustus apart. Not long ago there were calls for AA to retire for his own health.
Looks like after TBA, Khan will probably fight Arthur. It would be a big event, an OK test, albeit another blown up fighter - though Alex should really have been a lightweight after beating Palomo.

If it is Aldo Rios than that'd be ok even if he is feather fisted, at least he is a career lightweight and only lost to Top 10 quality guys like Ricky Hatton, Isaac Hlatswayo, Artur Grigorian and Stevie Johnston plus only ever been stopped by Hatton so will probably take Khan the full 12 rds

Unfortunately for Khan his chin will prevent him from ever progressing into the top tier. As someone said earlier the time for solely blaming Warren has now come to an end as Khan had his chance last week to mix it with better opposition and chose to stay with Sports Network.
Im sure Murray or Romanov would jump at the chance to fight him but that would actually be a decent match up so I wont be holding my breath.
