Quite a bold move from Theophane. Corley has obviously slipped but with his experience at world class, this would still turn heads if Ashley can perform.

He might as well go for it.

Maybe Corley has lost it enough for Ashley to get the win and maybe start to earn himself a few quid.

An interesting fight in the States on Wednesday pairs Londoner Ashley "Treasure" Theophane with former WBO light-welterweight champion DeMarcus Corley over eight rounds in Rochester, New York.
Theophane is the brash, fast-talking, fiercely independent Kilburn man - a sort of modern version of Adrian Dodson - who refuses to be tied down and fights all over the globe, although most of his fights have come at home. In his last fight a month ago, he floored and outscored Kenyan Geoffrey Munika at York Hall but was outscored in a tough 10-rounder in the States before that by prolific-punching Frenchman Ali "Hurricane" Oubaali. He dropped Oubaali, a former European title challenger, in the sixth round but was outworked much of the way and the points were unanimous. Still, it was a good learning fight for Theophane, quick of hand and feet and with a high workrate, although his power is questionable. He foored Oubaali, yes, but it was one off those off-balance type knockdowns. At 21-3-1 (7) Ashley is much more boxer than banger.
Corley does carry a whack. The dangerous 34-year-old southpaw from Washington, D.C. goes by the colourful nickname of "Chop Chop" and once rocked Miguel Cotto to his boots and also went the full 12 rounds with Floyd Mayweather Jnr, which is more than Ricky Hatton could do. Muscled DeMarcus is now on the other side of the mountain, however, having lost his last four, one of them to Bradford's Junior Witter for the vacant WBC light-welterweight title in north London's Ally Pally in September 2006. Corley gave a good account of himself early on but was hurt in the middle rounds and his challenge fizzled out thereafter, although he never looked like being stopped and conceded a unanimous decision. He lost his WBO title, incidentally, at the hands of Zab Judah back in 2003 in Las Vegas, also on points.
A pro 12 hard years, Corley has probably forgotten more than Theophane will ever learn but the fight business is a cruel business and the 27-year-old Theophane has the energy and confidence to make the elder man fight at an uncomfortable pace on Wednesday - and even force an upset. On reflection, however, Corley has been losing to good men of late - better men than Theophane - and the last thing they lose is their punch. At home Corley looks to have enough left to make his way a hard-earned decision. Either way, Theophane should emerge with credit.

Ranking-wise (British), where would that put Theophane?

I know Corley is faded, losing his last four, but he is a former world champion. Would the win catapult Ashley above the likes of David Barnes, who has beaten Ted Bami and Barry Morrison at light-welterweight?

Difficult to know where to put him, if he wins at least.

I think it would get him a top ten ranking and that would be about it. No way would he be above the British champion for beating Corley.

Theophane is forging himself out a decent run overseas at the moment. Has he got promotional connections? Corley is faded but the fact that Ashley lost to Chebah last time out makes DeMarcus a slight favourite for my money.

Great result, no matter how worn DMC was, I always thinks its something of a watershed when a fighter beats a former world-champion - admittedly, a belt holder in this case - but lest we forget its less than two years, from memory, since Corley came here to fight Witter.

Plus Ashley is getting exposure on US tv , so should lead to some more fights over there

Well done Ashley - a good scalp no matter what stage Corley is at. Even better when you consider Theopane took the fight at ten days notice. I hope he can build on this and earn himself some good money against a good opponent.

Pleasantly surprised. When I saw him at Bethnal green thought he was ordinary. He does look like a doodlepad though

It might be that Ashley is doing it himself. Perhaps he is taking a slight wage cut in order to get the fights. Maybe after this win he'll get signed up by someone over there. If he's fighting in NYC a lot it could be Lou DiBella or some of the other lesser Big Apple promoters.

Boxing may not be what it once was in NYC, but there a few well-attended shows every month to keep things ticking over.

From what I hear Ashley promotes himself very well and does a lot of ground floor work. Gotta respect him.

This win should really build Theophane's confidence. He must surely be seen as dangerous contender for the British title.

i was at this fight. its tough to say how good theopane is. corley is washed up and should retire now. with that said much like hopkins or winky(although not as good as either one) its tough to look good against corley. he just doesnt give you much and does not come forward enough to give you openings. theopane is ready for another step up and well see where he goes fron there.

Thophane seems willing to fight most people, how about him against Olusegun? If not there are more than enough good fighters domestically at light welter at the moment, hopefully he can get a fight with one of Bami, Wright, Morrison or Daws before stepping up to a Barnes or Lynes.
