Kids are treated too softly by parents and schools these days and that's a contributing factor to the lack of discipline shown by kids IMO. Smacking children is frowned upon, but it's an effective deterrent from misbehaving when you're a child. I'd bring back the slipper/cane/birch/stocks/electric chair in schools as well.

I think as a society we're recieving the punishment for our far too liberal nicey nicey politically correct ways of the past decade or 2.

I was walking down Croydon in london on friday night and some twat offered to "Shank Me" if i didnt give him some bus fare. He was prepared to take my life for Two feckin quid. luckily he didnt follow me when i walked away.

I'm gonna try and find some stats, I'm pretty sure its always (well, say past 15 years) been like this but little-reported on. Now Amy Winehouse is keeping quiet and Pete Doherty is cleaning himself up there's a big gaping hole in the headlines so we're reading about it every day.

As for the cause... parenting, lack of family structure? Kids looking for the respect and attention on from their friends and the on streets that they should be getting at home? I dunno, haven't put much thought into it, will chip in later.

The police don't catch these mugs and even if they did the courts are so lenient they get a fine or community service, or a trip to Disneyland with their fellow offenders.

A misplaced idea about what ‘respect’ means. A lot of these kids come from poor single parent situations and haven’t been taught basic principles, because their parents had little themselves.

Kids are impressionable. If parents/adults do not instil essential values but allow them to be feral then they will become feral. If they haven’t got a strong positive role model they will be influenced by anything with a misguided sense of understanding ie. gangster rap/ hip hop.

Liberalism across a whole variety of social and cultural aspects.

A very laissez-faire attitude towards many things has resulted in some people not caring about things which are fundamental in our society...and a whole raft of misguided do-gooders who actually aren't doing any good at all.

It's all about rights, rights, rights and nothing about responsibilities which come with those rights.

I've said it a million times before because I've done it myself - go and spend a morning in a magistrates court and an afternoon in a secondary school.

You won't believe it.

In saying that, there are millions of young kids just trying to do their own thing and make a positive contribution to the world.

this pc namby pamby culture is out of control. if kids want to be treated like theyre adults then they should be punished as such. Zero tolerance should be brought in, oh wait that would fill the prisons up, and we cant have that!
I say one strike and you are straight into a 2yr boot camp, with possibility of going to afganistan, that way everyone wins, except the scumbag.

The absolute root cause is class hierarchy and social deprivation; then there are disparate reasons attached to that. Imagine building a house...that would be the foundation.

Some relatives of mine quite rightly went through a long and thorough process in order to be deemed responsible enough to get the green light to receive a pet dog from Waggy Tails.

The sad fact is that having children is often the only event that some people experience in their lives to make them feel special. But so many mothers and fathers are not equipped or ultimately motivated to perform such role of responsiblity.

The state can't stop people having children, but it can get much tougher in how it deals with violent criminals. How will anything change when these people don't fear going to prison? When mugging someone is seen as a gamble worth taking? The sentences have to be much tougher!

I used to think this and I still do to a certain extent.

I've worked in education for the past 14 years and it's heartbreaking to see how kids piss away their opportunities. The way out of social deprivation is education and hard f*cking work.

But, as I tell the kids I teach, you can not have a better start in life than having parents who care about you. There are too many who don't.

Gray-Fox is right, Poverty & social deprivation is the cause of much of the world's problems and that is 'fed' by greed & power at the other end of the scale - it is 'purposeful' and sustained by political regimes that either support or are themselves 'subjective' to the power & control of the world's resourse and manpower!

the Good Book doesn't say "the poor yea shall have with you always" for nothing, add to that "all the day long yea are like lambs led to the slaughter"... point is, IT IS ALL INTENTIONAL and will never change untill the grip of pride, arrogance & power are broken, and believe it, that day will come.

fortunately we can & should make a difference, but it is a constant 15 rounder, humility and recognition of the reality of Evil and likewise the existance of the Almighty and his ultimate final end, peace, purity & prosperity, and Forever more is the answer and for more than just Knife problems too. The figures do not include the tens of thousands of assaults against under-16s.

The police refute the governments figures, and in fact the police figures showed violent crime up nearly 80 per cent since Labour came to power.

Well no, not really

It's not like we talk about rape, or other crimes

A lot of kids today want everything the easiest way possible including tough guy reputations, theyre
not brave enough to work for it by training to become a real fighter so they take the shortcut of carrying knives or other weapons to create this image.
This in turn causes the knockon effect of other kids carrying knives because theyre scared of the cowards
that are carrying them in the first place.
If people think this problem is being blown out of proportion then they are sadly in denial as its happening
all over the country every single day.
